Sunday NY times and Hawaii

In the Q and A section of the Sunday NY times, there is a question about seven day cruises in Hawaii. The only two ships mentioned are the NCL Wind and Aloha. The answer does refer the people to cruisecritic for info from former passengers on the POAl... I do think that sometimes its funny how the Times writes something it says about the POAl "...operates under the United States flag, meaning it can sail to American ports only..." I didn't realize it couldn't travel anywhere else. I think they mean "may" instead of can.. it can travel anywhere but doesn't need special permission to travel to US ports without going someplace foreign although it can if it wants to.

here is the link. You need to register to see the whole thing.

Smeyer,

Actually, NYT was correct. One of the little-known details of this "Sweetheart deal" that NCL received from the US Government is a clause that allows them to re-flag a foreign built ship (The Norwegian Sky), but ONLY allows the ship to call at Hawaiian Ports in the USA. There had been discussion in Congress that re-flagging a foreign built ship would allow it to compete with existing ships on the Mainland. So a special clause was inserted to prevent that happening. The only viable way that Pride of Aloha can sail outside Hawaii is to change the flag back again.

And the Wind does alternating 10 and 11 day itineraries, which include Fanning Island. It does not do 7 day cruises.
