pearlygrl9 Posted June 29, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 29, 2007 Will I be fine with little to no Spanish-speaking ability even if I wander off of the main tourist area? We really want to get to some of the more local shops, but I'm a little concerned about only knowing how to say "hello," "yes," and "no" :(
parrotthead Posted June 29, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 29, 2007 The Majority of the folks in the tourist towns speak english. I am not sure if you wonder too far off the beaten path, but along the main places, everyone speaks pretty good english.
bruce-r Posted June 29, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 29, 2007 And if you do get off into the 'hood, the people are generally pretty nice and you'll be able to work something out. Many do speak at least some English.

Go back to the Flea Market -so beautiful and cheaper.Wonderful eager to please shop owners. Agree with you. We were there a couple of months ago. The main drag down by the water was a mad house. There were 6 or 7 ships there that day. We wandered back off the strip a few blocks and it was very pleasant. No crowds and the prices in the shops were lower. Had a relaxed meal and the food was great. (Casa Denise) catering mostly to locals. We made out just fine with our limited Spanish. PrettyLA Posted July 1, 2007 #7 Share Posted July 1, 2007 In the main area they speak pretty good english. You might want to consider taking a small spanish-english dictionary with you for backup if you are that unsure. You can get them for cheap, I got one at the checkout lane at the store for about 99 cents. You could also just ask them "habla ingles" which means do you speak english? I think.. sorry it's been a couple years since I've taken spanish.

LHP Posted July 1, 2007 #9 Share Posted July 1, 2007 Cozumel is my favorite port. The reason is the people. They work very hard to keep Cozumel tourist friendly and I really appreciate that. You will have a great time!

Scooter-n-GB Posted July 2, 2007 #12 Share Posted July 2, 2007 DW and I took a catamaran snorkel trip, and I ordered a cerveza and thanked the server, all in Spanish, but got a "you're welcome", in return. I hope the heck they didn't think I was being patronizing.

will work to cruise Posted July 3, 2007 #14 Share Posted July 3, 2007 Money is the universal language. It's amazing how someone's English gets better when the money comes out! This goes for all countries.
