We will be visiting Grand Cayman in november, we really didn't want to take a ship tour or get a private driver. Does anyone know if there are any tour guides or locals waiting for the ship passengers when they get off the ship to show them the island? When we were in curacao, as soon as we walked off the ship we saw several signs and had several people asking us if we wanted to tour their island for a small fee of $15.00 or $20.00 per person. We decided go tour with a woaman and her daughter and they gave us a fantastic tour. Her Van was air conditioned and there were 5 other people in her van and we were not crowded at all. That's the only type of tour that I am interested doing since we've been to several of the ports many times over. Her tour consisted of sightseeing the island, sighseeing two of the beaches for pitcure taking only, the distillery, the historic area which consisted of Jewish historical area along with the historical slave areas, The tour also consisted of a short stop for shopping and then you could choose to be let off in town or back at the ship. They were very knowledgeable about their island. The entire tour took about 3-4 hours and it was one of the best paid tours i've ever taken. So again, that's the type of tour we're looking to do, something very simple but yet covers all of the basic sights and stops. Any suggesstions or names to look for?

Captain Marvins offers tours...you'll see Hell, the turtle farm and drive along the 7MB area. I think it's around $25 or so per person. But this tour doesn't last 3-4 hours...it seems like it only takes 2 hours. I know what you're talking about...we've done the same thing on other islands...but I just don't recall ever seeing anything like that on Grand Cayman. We always go there for a land vacation and rent a car and drive around the island on our own (GC is one of those unique islands that you can do that on and feel safe about doing so).

Maybe someone else will come along with other suggestions. At one time someone mentioned a company that does island tours where they get away from the 7MB area, but I can't find it at this point.

I'd also be interested in something like this. Not a pre-arranged tour guide, but rather can you walk off the tender and find guides to take you on a tour of the island for a low price.

There is nothing that is cheap in Grand Cayman. It's a VERY expensive island. We've been to a lot of islands where you can find someone to drive you around for several hours and show you the sights for $20 or so. I doubt you're going to find this in GC. But there are locals who post here, so maybe they have some ideas.

If you're in port on a day where there are only a couple of ships, then you probably would be able to find a guide...but many days there are 5-10 ships in port so I'd probably have something lined up in advance, or book something on the ship.

You might consider renting a car. We always rent a car for the week (while we are there), and explore the island. Grand Cayman is one of those rare islands where you can get out and explore on your own, and feel safe doing so. We always use Andy's for our car rental, but there are lots of others.
