Cruising With A Service Dog....everything You Ever Wanted To Know!

Recommended Posts

I will be cruising with my blind friend and her Labrador SD. Last year we went to Nassau (did not get off the ship) and Key West. This year we are going to Cozumel and Key West. Does anyone have experience with any stray dogs in Cozumel? I am nervous because I would be the only one looking out for dogs that might attack the SD. We probably would just be shopping in Cozumel, and not on a ship-sanctioned excursion.

Last year in Key West we had a pit bull puppy on a parked motorcycle snap at the SD and had a pit bull on the street that the owner had to restrain. It scares me a bit because I feel responsible. An attack in Mexico would be even more scary.

Any advise?

Thanks.

In Cozumel, I did an excursion to a beach (Playa Mia or something? It included lunch and beach and water toy use). I only came across a stray when we got out of the cab back at the cruise center after our excursion. I hurried into the cruise center as fast as I could (I have mobility issues) and the cab drivers and other workers there helped by shooing the stray away/blocking it from getting to my service dog, which was very considerate of them. The dog wasn't aggressive, but was trying to follow us. I did some shopping in the cruise center - don't forget to get a bottle of vanilla from Mexico!

In Key West, I came across a little dog that was loose and I had to tell it several times to "go home", but it eventually left us alone. It was on the street back to the cruise ship, so I had no choice of where to go. It may have belonged to one of those shops, but I am not sure.

Oh, and do not forget to put on sunblock in Mexico!!! I did and it wasn't pretty....

I have the forms, but just re-read your posting. Since you are going to Castaway Cay - you have to be sailing Disney. The best thing for you to do is to contact Special Services as they'll send you the forms, make sure your reservation is marked for having a Service Dog - which will make your whole life easier. In fact, they want you to contact them when sailing with a SD.

Here is the email address and phone number - VERY nice people:

specialservices@disneycruise.com P: 407-566-3602 | F: 407-566-3760

Holly

Now that I have been thinking about this for the past few days, I do think I got the permit emailed to me previously and sent it in. Thank you for the offer to send it to me. I will ask if Disney can give it to me. The reservation is flagged already and I have spoken to special services. This will be the 3rd Disney cruise. Thanks!

I am in the Toms River area tvaud. (Exit 80)

I'm a Jersey Girl too. Exit 156. I live in Maryland now, exit 67, but they don't get the whole exit thing here. Traffic reports always say route numbers and it's not very helpful if you don't know where they are.

Had fun this weekend. Every year, the town of Deland in Florida has a dog parade. It's fun to see the creativity of people. I don't have photos. Wished I had brought my camera but it was raining when I left. Fortunately the sun came out and fun was had by all.

I held down the booth...LOL...literally at times. VERY windy day.

We are expecting 18" to 24" of snow tonight. So Orson will be in the house. Davis will keep wanting to go outside to play in the snow. And we will loose the Yorkie. But when he comes in the snow sticks to his hair. e have to use a blow dryer to melt the snow off. I HATE SNOW!!:mad:

Hi DKD

Just saw your "snow" on the TV news and they were saying expect more! OMdawg - you know how you US peeps love to send your left-over weather over this way - well, this, you can KEEP!!! ;):D

We had a quick visit to the airport today, DH off for a short trip. Instead of just dropping him off - they now charge for this £1 for I think 10 minutes! So I thought let's park and take Aruba, it will cost about the same and we can walk him to the security gate.

So working coat on and looking very smart - Aruba that is! - off we went and escorted Dad into the terminal. Well, this beautiful girl never fails to amaze me. It's been a few months since we were there on our educational visit with the pups, but she remembered - she strode confidently into the building and walked to the check in desk where she was oohed and aaahed over by the check in girls and then on to the security where we had to leave her Dad. Well, she stared after him and he did come back and wave again, and the security man was smiling at this as she looked so sad to see him go. You know that kind of "oh but where's he gone without me" look! Anyway with a quick "come on", we set off back to the car.

Now all of this probably took just over 15 minutes - I couldn't believe the car park charge - £3! Absolutely ridiculous!

Never mind it's all good for her training. Then we went to a new supermarket on the way home and she was as good as gold.

The best part about today, no "well-meaning" distractions from anyone.

And now this I am so excited about - we also had a first today! Aruba can now jump up into the back of my car! Yeh!!! Thank dawgness as at 34kgs she was getting a bit too heavy to lift up! I was despairing of her ever doing it, but this morning, up she went, light as a feather.

Keep safe and warm everyone affected by this awful weather in the U.S. :)

PS - Nancy - I didn't comment on your sad story of Sultan as like Roz I don't think I could have written what I really felt. Another hero flying with the Angels.

Way to go Aruba, and the new firsts! :)

And anyone up north in the path of Juno (guess they are now naming storms) stay warm, and stay safe!

To ALL our Eastern U.S. friends who are suffering through this deluge of cold, snowy weather; hang in there, spring is on its way. Even though it seems so far away. I bet you guys are pretty sick of snow by now! Horty and I send our love to all of you.

Fairbourne, you sound so proud of your girl. She's really coming along nicely, isn't she. We're all so proud of her!

For all of you who are traveling to the Caribbean and Mexico with your SD's be very careful of the strays. Morey bought me a walking stick that I took with me when we'd go adventuring around. Even an umbrella can serve as a shooing away device. There's really no secret to keeping the strays away except to just avoid them by not adventuring into areas that you're unsure of or where there would be no one else to assist you in protecting your dog, which really is your number one priority.

When Morey was in the hospital I brought Brenda and Horton to visit him and some moron brought an "in tact" pit bull to visit someone else. That dog would have killed one of my babies if the jerk didn't have him on a "CHAIN", NOT a leash, rope or any other tether but a CHAIN that you'd close a steel fence with. I left my dogs in with Morey, closed the door, walked down the hall and told the guy that if he didn't remove his dog I was going to call the police. He didn't say a word and walked out the door and the next time I saw the dog it was in his truck with the windows rolled-up!

This is what you have to be so careful of when you're out and about with your Service Dogs. They are sitting ducks when it comes to aggressive dogs. Our SD's have absolutely no idea how to protect themselves. They're taught "tolerance" at all expense. They're taught to remain calm, passive and friendly. IT'S OUR DUTY TO PROTECT THEM!!!

Thanks Roz. We actually had no snow until the other day. Now we are getting a winters worth in one day.:thumbdown:

DKD,

The latest weather reports have scaled back on the snowfall prediction totals. We may all catch a bit of a break. We will still get snow, but it won't be as devastating as they first predicted. Still...it's no fun for humans or our dogs. Keep an eye on that yorkie. If you see any unusually large snowballs, check for a bark.;)

Stay safe!

Roz,

We encountered two huge mastiffs in PetSmart the other day. I gasped, and Pedro's eyes got huge, but he just stayed closer to us as we passed. Luckily, the mastiffs were both show dogs and very well mannered. Our little Pedro had never seen anyone or anything that big before. I was proud that he wasn't spooked by them. You just never know...

Oh, the post office may have lost one of Pedro's new Tommy Bahama shirts. It was stated as "delivered" on the tracking site, but they were not left at the door. I called the post master today and they are looking into it. I hope they find it. In the meantime, his bow tie/collar and cuffs came in along with two Ralph Lauren shirts(one is monogrammed!:D) and a straw Panama hat. I'm still waiting for the Hawaiian shirts to come in. He's going to have a better wardrobe than me!:p

Hope all our eastern seaboard US friends, are doing ok with the snow and storms you're having.

Just watched the lunchtime news and saw New York not as bad as predicted. It did remind me of when I was in New York in the early 90's hosting a group of high spending travel agents taking part in a familiarisation visit. Well, a two night trip turned into a 5 night HOO HAA - we had the worst snow storm they'd had in many, many years and seeing New York today quite deserted with snow on the normally busy streets reminded me of that trip! No-one was allowed out on the streets as there were high winds and those winds were causing windows to break high up and sent shards crashing down onto the sidewalk. We did venture out and the only people we met were a TV crew who declined to interview us! LOL!

Thankfully we were guests also of Virgin Atlantic and they put on extra aircraft to get everyone home, not just us - we came home "upfront" and I seem to remember we "poured" ourselves off at Gatwick!! LOL! ah those were the days when I was young(ish), free and single and totally dog less! Would I trade back for those days - no, not ever, never! ;):D

Roz, you have no idea how proud I am of this girl ..... I adore her and the other two of course! She just goes into a totally different mindset when she's out "working" - puppy workshop this week, first one for a while, so we will get the "official" opinion on how she's doing then!

DKD,

Is your electricity still on? How did the storm turn out in your area? We are having record warm temps this week in Kansas City. Not blazing hot, just warmer than normal. Gibson keeps wishing for some snow to run in. Not sure what it is with Labs and snow...

If you don't get the Tommy Bahama shirts call or email the vendor and tell them that your package says delivered but you did not get it. Then ask them to re-send. They should be willing to provide since the delivery went astray. Who knows where the package was left... One other thing that we have experienced is that through USPS the tracking will say delivered and it doesn't show up until a day or so later. Just never know what is up with the postal service delivery system.

Thanks!

Cindra,

Our Service Dogs were raised with gentle, loving, kindness. They're not taught aggression of any kind. What would they do if backed into a corner or if they saw us getting hurt? CCI said, they don't really know. Horton is 90 pounds, could he protect himself if taught, you bet. But, little Pedro, wouldn't have a chance. You're his protector. I'd die before I'd let anything or anyone hurt my Horty.

Better yet, if you see potential trouble walk the other way or stop and wait for "it" to pass.

I can't wait to see the picture of Pedro in his outfits......so darn cute! :p

I love New York.....she certainly can weather whatever the gods dish out to her! But, no matter what, New York can take it and come back stronger and better than ever!

Good luck in the workshop, come back and give us the good news about how she's doing. ;)

Good news! Pedro's Tommy Bahama shirt arrived today with a couple of other packages without fanfare. I did call the post master to let them know it did indeed arrive today....since they never called me back. They didn't even remember my case. This doesn't surprise me at all...

Along with the TB shirt, a colorful parrot Hawaiian shirt arrived for Pedro. It matches one of my husband's shirts, so we will have to coordinate that one night. It would make for a cute photo.
