Ncl Is Going Smoke Free!

Droopy Sails, this new policy obviously does not effect you, so why do you continue to berate those it does?

Pooh, I'm not berating you; I'm taking apart your weak arguments. You guys keep citing "facts" that aren't true (no inside bars), then changing the arguments when you're corrected (you don't like the casino bar, the cigar bar has no bartender, etc.).

This policy has left you numerous choices for smoking venues; what you don't like is that you can't smoke in all bars anymore. I understand that if the need to smoke in every bar is stronger than other NCL features, you'll move on to other cruiselines. NCL understands this, too. We'll all take a deep breath ;) and wish you well on other lines.

Do you think that's a real analogy to walking a few feet to the bar next to the cigar bar? Are you seriously arguing that this is an inconvenience? If NCL assigned a full-time bar waiter to the cigar bar, would that satisfy you?

Think of the tips that one enterprising waiter would get... I would make sure I went into the cigar bar just to serve the smokers if I was a bar waiter... could be a lucrative deal for a lucky crewmember.

If the new policy results in more people in the cigar bar...there will be bar staffers in the cigar bar. NCL is interested in selling drinks.

Maybe the real difference here is that I was a smoker in a state that adopted even stricter smoking laws than these restrictions, and it didnt affect me. Our household became smoke free on Mothers Day, but on our last cruise in early May on the Dawn... we both smoked. Doing a quick check, it would have prevented me from smoking in Dazzles and the Galaxy of the Stars... and that was it. Not too difficult for us to have to go outside if we were so inclined. We did that every day here until we quit.

If you are from a state that hasn't adopted these laws yet ( and they will, its a matter of time) than I can see your frustration, but for some of us it's already been second nature. Vote with your feet if you are so inclined, but there's a heck of alot more to NCL than a smoking policy... I can't see how that could be a determining factor and override everything else.

I hope not!!! There's no room for more than half a dozen people in there to have a smoke as is!!!

Why is there always a comparison with eating and smoking? The reason people don't like smokers is because it affects non-smokers and can kill people. People who overeat do not affect others around them (unless they fall on you or explode). If they invented a cigarette that didn't affect non-smokers at all, with no smell etc. I wouldn't care if you smoked them near me. However when I spend money on nice cloths and cologne and go out and 30 minutes later I smell like an ashtray and have inhaled enough smoke to actually make me ill over time, then I have a major problem with it.

Don't get me wrong, I think they should have a place for you to smoke, a bar somewhere that does not affect non-smokers, but just don't try to compare with other things unless they have a direct affect on those around you.

I agree completely!

As an asthmatic who is allergic to cigarette smoke (and has had 2 very serious asthma attacks directly related to cigarette smoke) I get VERY offended when anyone compares smoking to over-eating. Sitting next to a persons over-eating has never sent me to the emergency department! Smokers delude themselves that their habit is just "inconvenient" or a "minor irritation" to others. The last time I checked death is not just a minor irritation.

OK - down off my soap-box but it really makes me go ballistic when smokers make silly comparisons. Back to reality and my experiences with smokers - on and off cruiseships. In general I have found that most smokers who know that you are asthmatic are incredibly considerate. My MIL and best friend are smokers - neither will smoke anywhere near me (even in their own homes!) and even when I have assured them that a light concentration of cigarette smoke does not have serious consequences for me. On cruiseships I have only found the casino to be bad enough to avoid. HOWEVER strictly from a comfort standpoint (I cough a lot when the smoke concentration rises) (rather than desperate health need) I am glad NCL is going to limit smoking even more and clearly define smoking areas.

I would have no problem with the concept of designated "smoking bars" but I don't think ALL bars should allow smoking - I think I have a right to enjoy a cough-free evening and a drink.

I couldn't agree more! I think that's what most of us are saying. We have no problem whatsoever with SOME of the bars being smoke-free, we just want to have a smoke with our drink. :)

Interesting to read about the idea of a cleaning fee for smoking in the cabins. We are in a Hilton Garden Inn. When we made reservations, we asked for a non-smoking room. When we arrived, my DH had to sign a paper stating that if when we left, the hotel employees detected that we had smoked in this room, the Hilton would charge our credit card $200 for the clean up of the non-smoking room.

The other interesting tidbit, many hotels, motels, inns, etc. are now non-smoking, period. No rooms for smoking, no smoking inside anywhere. People have to go outside to smoke.

Another interesting tidbit. Minneapolis, Minneosta last year banned smoking in the bars in the city proper area. The bars were mad as **** and said they would be forced to close. None closed. This fall, laws go into effect that all public areas will be smoke free, restaurants, bars, etc.

Another as a former smoker that quit because of health issues with our youngest daughter, not asthma, but CPOD

( premie), no smoking has been allowed in our house. Her condition is aggravated by cigarette smoke. It will send her to the Doctors and Hospital with pneumonia and brochitis(sp).

Way-To-Go NCL and thanks for listening to the non-smokers and helping us breath cleaner air. We will continue to cruise with you and bring our friends.

Yes, you certainly do. I am a smoker, and I try to be considerate. If I hear my non smoking, cruise neighbors step out on the balcony, I will put my cigarette out, as long as they haven't made rude remarks to me. People tend to respond to kindness and considerateness much better than rudeness.

I think it would be a great idea to have the Star Bar be a smoking bar, and close if off to Cagneys.

The Havana Club is not a bar, and Gatsby's (which is the bar next to it) is not open until later in the afternoon. The Havana Club is not listed under the 'bar' category on NCL's site, but under the 'play' category.

The Casino Bar is not where you want to sit around with friends and chat. It is loud and it's difficult to carry on a conversation.

There are 9 bars on the Dawn, including the Casino Bar, but not the Havana Club. Surely they could make one regular bar smoking. I hope that's not too much to ask.

Personally I think all ships should be alcohol free. More people on cruise ships have died or been injured as a result of alcohol than tobacco.

We can almost guarantee that is not true. How many cruisers who smoke have died of lung cancer?

If anyone has died from lung cancer while on board ANY ship I'm really sorry to hear it!!

As for how many fell overboard etc. while drinking ...well I guess I just don't have those statistics either. :D

And since there's no other place onboard for you to smoke, no other place at all ;), that cigar bar is going to be really, really uncomfortable. Hey, maybe NCL should think about allowing smoking on deck, in the casino and in the cabins.

Your posts are increasingly desperate, but increasingly entertaining. ;)

Wow, what a discussion. As a non-smoker, I am happy. I have a sister with a "fatal allergy" to cigarette smoke (pulmonologist's words, not ours) who can't cruise because of the lack of a guaranteed non-smoking cabin.

That said, asking smokers to not smoke for a week is a little ridiculous. I would much rather know that there are smoking bars, recreational and deck areas then have the guy on the balcony next to me blowing smoke constantly. I could choose to avoid those designated smoking areas, which is what I will do on the Pearl in October.

I also completely understand those of you who are upset about this late change. This could have a huge impact on a smoker's cruise. I am wondering, has anyone contacted NCL to see what they are willing to do to make it right for you, since at the time of booking the smoking rules were more relaxed. Just wondering.
