Member Posted July 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2007 Two of us shall arrive Venice by train in mid-Sept. evening for the MSC Opera cruise the next day. With 2 large check-in luggage and 2 hand carries to drag along, we figure to check-in at a decent hotel around Cannaregio Ovest (west) district is better than crossing the 80-steps Scalzi bridge to other districts. Besides, from the hotel near the Grand Canel there, we can load our lugguge onto the water bus #1 at the Ferrovia dock to Piazza Roma rather than crossing more canel bridges on the Santa Croce side. Now is there one Cannaregio Ovest area that has elevator from the ground floor to the guest room? Thanks for the insight of this in advance. Two things: There is an excellent bag check place in P. Roma 3.50e day which would give you a much wider choice of hotels. Also these are two sites that have many lisitngs in all price rages. (sleepinitaly.com and the standby Venere.com) We did a princess trip in April and just dumped bags there and took small overnight bag to hotel worked great. Member Posted July 13, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted July 13, 2007 If there is locker for big luggage at the S. Lucia train station, it'll be more helpful in our case, I think. But we'd prefer to check-in the hotel with our luggage still.

(Louis) If you are willing to take your luggage from the train station to the other side of the grand canal at Plaza Roma, then i would suggest The hotel santa chiara http://www.hotelsantachiara.it Nice people, rooms and reasonable! But getting all that luggage accros is not easy. You already know of the steps on the bridges (3 in total to get to the hotel). The vaporetto is a good choice if as its only one stop to Plaza Roma BUT not going to be easy to manuver all those bags onto the boat in a crowd which is always the case at that station. Member Posted July 14, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted July 14, 2007 If the new glass bridge linking the train station to Piazza Roma were opened on time (now by the end of 2007), I may consider crossing it to the well equipped Hotel Santa Chiara. Now, I wonder if there a solid walking platform for passenger with luggage to get in and out of a vaporetto at the Ferrovia docking?
EGG Posted July 14, 2007 #7 Share Posted July 14, 2007 We arrived by train from Rome at 9:30 at night and stayed at the Best Western in Meistre. The hotel was right accross the street from the train station, reasonably priced, and a bargain compared to Venice. The next day we took an early taxi to the ship, dropped off our luggage and off to Venice. We had lots of time before heading back to the ship for check in. The hotel and the breakfast were both 4*. The main question I would ask is what time are you arriving in the evening and are you planning to walk around Venice that night. We had walked around Rome for 7 hours and between that and the 4.5 hour train ride we had no plans to try to go into Venice. Enjoy!
Member Posted July 14, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted July 14, 2007 We shall arrive from Torino by train at around 5:30pm that day and plan to spend the evening at St. Mark Square first. In the next morning, we shall tour the Murano island, then check-out the hotel to do some shopping nearby, and head to embark our cruise ship by 4:00pm.
