SoCalGal Posted August 1, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 1, 2007 We have booked the Grand Hotel Flora in Rome for our pre-cruise night next June and we're wondering about the location. It sounds as if it is near the city center. For anyone that has stayed there, could you tell us if it's possible to walk to many interesting sites in Rome. Thanks! travelingmcmahans Posted August 1, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 1, 2007 We stayed recently. It's at the top of Via Veneto. At the foot of the hill (5-10 minutes) is Piazza Barberini, where there are interesting crypts. We walked nearly everywhere (other than the Vatican area) from here. It's up quite a hill, though, which made for a bit of a hike. I'd guess it was a 20 minute stroll to the Spanish steps. Beautiful hotel! You'll love it. sealover155 Posted August 1, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 1, 2007 We stayed twice at the Westin Excelsior which is a block away. We loved the neighborhood's little shops, especially the wine shops, and restaurants and easily walked to the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti, etc. Also, to the right as you exit the hotel, is part of the old city wall and just beyond are the Borghese Gardens including the Galerie Borghese, one of the most important museums in Rome. You must reserve ahead, online, with a designated time but it is well worth the effort. The gardens are perfect for a picnic. Harry's Bar is just across the street, fun for late night. You'll love the location
suzy671 Posted August 1, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 1, 2007 We stayed there this past April and absolutely loved the location, convenient to a lot of the sites and great restaurants, can't go wrong.
Capsu78 Posted August 1, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 1, 2007 What the others said... We had to walk everywhere due to a Italian hooky, I mean strike day. We even made it all the way to the Vatican, but it was a bit of a long pub crawl back. We left at 9 in the AM, didn't get back until 10 PM. It is on Embassy row, with the US embassy right down the block. Very nice basement restaurant right around the corner (left out door, left at first steet and on the right side) reasonable, many locals. Harry's, just because you have to say you had a drink there...just open you wallet and say "help yourself". You are also close to the Hard Rock Roma, in case you need some trinkets to bring back for the teens. The Grand Flora has a decent hotel bar, and a fabulous rated rooftop resturant if budget is not an issue. All in all a high end property. SoCalGal Posted August 1, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted August 1, 2007 Thanks all of you for the info...sounds great! We did visit Rome in 2001 and saw the Vatican and some of the sites mentioned so it sounds like a perfect place for walking around.
