snownyet Posted August 6, 2007 #26 Share Posted August 6, 2007 Keep in mind if he wants to smoke them onboard he cant buy the duty free cartons and take them back to the room. Its just like the liquour, you buy duty free but dont get them till its time to go home(unless you get a ships store employee willing to bend the rules for you). Basically you've got 3 choices for onboard consumption #1 bring them with you, #2 buy them duty free on an island and smuggle them aboard #3 Buy them in individual packs at one of the bars onboard at a cost af roughly $6.50 per pack. As a matter of fact, if he smokes them ALL before he gets home, he doesn't have to pay any tax at all. He DOES have to pay on anything over a carton that he brings back into the States, though, although from the looks of this thread, it looks like no one does. No....we didn't realize that he couldn't smoke what he bought on the ship, on the ship. So do they just hold them for you? His plan was to buy and smoke! And I know this is probably a dumb question that everyone should know the answer to :o but, what does "duty-free" mean? no tax maybe?

KC_fn Posted August 6, 2007 #31 Share Posted August 6, 2007 My 1st cruise my bestfriend and myself only bought 1 carton each, because we were nervous about getting more than 1, needless to say noone checked and I was p o'd so on my 2nd cruise (solo) this past Feb I decided to take a chance and came home with 4 cartons here in Mass they are like $50.00 per carton I paid about $37.00 for 2 and will be doing it again next month i did the same as you emptied them out and spread them out. Seems like an awfully expensive way to buy cheap cigarettes! :D
mustwork2cruise Posted August 6, 2007 #32 Share Posted August 6, 2007 Do you know if they have Copenhagen? For DH, not me! We're going on a girls cruise and he'd rather me bring him back cheap dip than a tshirt! My DH just told me that he didn't think they had Copenhagen on the boat. We did find some in Cozumel last year but, it was 7 bucks a can.

S.S.Oceanlover Posted August 6, 2007 #37 Share Posted August 6, 2007 I bought five cartons and they let me take all of them back to the room duty free!!!! I don't believe it's the cruiselines job to collect taxes on the cigarettes if you buy more than 1 carton . Wouldn't you take that up with customs when you get off? I have read that many people are just waved through if the duty is a very small amount. Bill

The only cruise line that I know of that does that is Princess. They will not let you take the cartons, but deliver them like booze on the last day. When I am on Princess I just buy them in the islands, you do not have to smuggle them on. Who knows why. They do sell them by pack, but I think they are about $3.50, definitely not $6.50. Carnival, HAL, RCL, Celebrity, NCL all allow you to take them with you. Cheers, Peter
snownyet Posted August 6, 2007 #40 Share Posted August 6, 2007 You can take them with you when you buy them they do not hold them only liquor. 5 cruises and we've NEVER been allowed to take them back to the room, on HAL's Noordam this past march I begged the store clerk to bend the rules and let me buy a carton to take to the cabin with no luck. Instead we paid $6.50 a pack at the casino bar. Good thing the DW ran out with only a day left on the trip.
deejae Posted August 6, 2007 #41 Share Posted August 6, 2007 I bought 4/5 cartons of cigarettes on my 2 Carnival cruises and have been allowed to take them to my room, no questions asked . Janet

Simru12 Posted August 6, 2007 #43 Share Posted August 6, 2007 Appreciate all the responses so far, but have a different question. I smoke American Spirit (high-end, all natural) and was wondering if this was one of the brands offered on board. I was on Princess last year and went through the Southern Carribean. I wasn't able to find them on the ship, or in any port. Also, anyone know what the prices are per pack in Jacksonville? I only ask because here in Chicago, with the federal, state, county and city taxes, we pay on average of $8.50 per pack, and would love to get them cheaper somewhere else. Thanks
yst347 Posted August 6, 2007 #44 Share Posted August 6, 2007 The ships only sell the largest brands, and even then just the most popular types.

I hope they let him take the cigs back because I thinking he is waiting to buy them there. I f not, I gotta feeling we are not going to spend much time together. Captain Edward John Smith Posted August 6, 2007 #49 Share Posted August 6, 2007 ok...I am confused:confused: Carnival does or does not let you take the cigs back to your room. Can anyone clear this up for me? Carnival WILL let you take the cigarettes with you to your cabin at the time of purchases, no ifs, ands or BUTTS about it (pun intended) :D :D Happy cruising everyone :)
MIZZ_K Posted August 7, 2007 #50 Share Posted August 7, 2007 You could have done that anyway?? What stopped you? I don't get it? Because it was my 1st cruise and I really did not know what to expect so I figured I would abide by the 1 carton rule. I did not know if everyone got checked coming back, now I know it's kind of random.
