Shore trips in Bermuda

What are your thoughts on buying one (or more) of the RCL shore trips in Bermuda? On the one hand, I've heard they are too costly. But on the other hand, these trips are a way to make the most of limited time on the island.

If you do recommend buying - what's your favorite?

This will be our first trip to Bermuda, so our emphasis is on trying to see as much as time allows. Our cruise is a seven-nighter.

Bermuda is probably one of the best ports in the world to do "on your own". The reasons for this are:

  • Excellent (economical, very reliable, and easy to use) public transportation system.
  • Hard to get too lost.
  • Usually in port overnight, so not a big risk for missing the ship.
  • Very safe, especially compared to some of the poorer Caribbean islands.
  • Friendly residents are usually willing to assist tourists with information and directions.
  • Free maps are available in the visitor centers.
  • If all else fails, there are plenty of taxis around to take you where you need to go.

Having said all that, I think there are a few excursions that are contracted to the ship, and may be available only through them. Also, some of the golf courses are private, but may be available through shipboard arrangement.

Bermuda can be expensive, but that doesn't have much to do with how you book your excursion. Of course just like anywhere else, the cruise line will take a cut, but Bermuda can be higher cost than some other ports all around.

Definitely check out the Bermuda Port of Call board. There are several Bermuda residents who post regularly who can answer any specific questions you might have.

I agree completely. Bermuda is one of the best places to do shore excursions on your own. Why spend your time waiting for people to get off the ship, onto the bus, etc.? We have a direct flight from our area and can be on the beach by 2:00PM on the first day. It's always great fun to rent the mopeds, just remember to drive on the left side of the road.
