ATM Fees on board ship

My bank is merging with another bank the week we cruise of course. I can't activate my new card till 1 hour after we set sail so I don't want to pay for a ship to shore call. It says I can activate it by also performing any transaction at an ATM. Does anyone remember what the fee is on the ship to use their ATM's?

Not sure how true it is - or whether it applies equally to all ships but this comes from Carnival's FAQ's. Don't forget to add in the fees your own bank may charge you.

 

Is there an ATM on board?

Guests are able to withdraw funds and make balance inquiries on their checking and savings accounts while the ship is in port or at sea. Please note: The supply of money may be depleted prior to the end of the cruise. Following is a list of major credit cards and Networks accepted: Honor, Tyme, Shazam, American Express, Magic Line, Oath, Mac, Master Card (Cirrus for Non-U.S.), Visa (Plus), Nyce Pulse, Yankee and Alert.

 

There is a $5.50 fee per transaction for this service which is controlled by the bank sponsoring the ATM's, Bank Atlantic of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I am sure that is less then what a phone call would be at $6.00 a minute.

 

$6? I paid $13/minute on my last cruise because my credit card company (Carnival Card no less) suspended my credit for security reasons. :rolleyes: It cost me $130 before I hung up and got no resolution. :eek:

Great, thanks for all the fast answers. I just want to use it once to get my new card activated in case I want to use it in a port or something one day. If we don't set sail right at 4:00 which we normally don't I can just use my cell phone. It also seems like it takes a little while to get to the open sea from Tampa so I will try my cell first to see if it works. It's weird the way this merger is set up, even though I already have my new card you can't activate it until August 19 at 5:00pm.

Something similar happened to me on the Destiny. I called for the pursers desk, was on the phone for about 90 minutes and I didn't have to pay a penny. They told me that were glad the issue was resolved to enjoy my cruise!

The few times I have used the ship to shore calling it was when we have traveled without our son & could not get any kind of card to work at a port. I would dial direct from the room & have it go on my sail & sign the last one was around $6.99 per minute. That had gone down a little bit from our last cruise & they were advertising it like it was really something!!!!! It's still a lot but when you are a mom without her child it's worth every penny. This time he is going with us. I see we set sail on the same date on different ships.

On Conquest last month it was right around $6!!:eek: Ouch!!:D

 

Sheri, $6 is too much no matter where you are! Just do this. Call your bank and have your limit raised that way you (hopefully) only have to use the ATM once.

 

Better idea is bring enough cash at the beginning.

 

But, OP has a dilemia! I woud have the bank raise your ATM limit. So you can get enough cash & only use the ATM one time while on board.

 

That eases the pain of the high fees, instead of getting $200 3-4 times @ 2.50-3.00 which most ATM's are now :)

Do you have a (very) trusted friend or family member that could make the call for you? If I remember correctly, you don't speak with anyone, just enter the information from the keypad.

Thats a good idea.

 

I would use my cell phone at sea its $2.50 a min with cingular the new at&t so at most it would take 2 min thats less than the atm fee and no bank charge.

 

I just activated my new one it took 1 min 12 sec on my cell phone.

Yes, I do have a friend picked out to do just that. We use the same bank so she will have to activate her new card too. I basically wanted to give myself peace of mind that it was done. You know the old saying "If you want something done right do it yourself!!!!"

 

As far as my cell at sea, I have Alltel & they don't have that capability yet.

FYI - Anytime I've had to activate a card I've had to do it from the phone number on file with the cc - as this is matched to be sure no one has gotten your card out of the mailbox and decided to activate it for themselves. If you don't do it from the number in file then you will be transferred to a person and won't be able to activate it by the keypad.

 

If you can do a balance inquiry without the fee this would be the way to go. The FAQ's are unclear though and it sounds like on the ship they MAY charge to check the balance. I would get clarification from someone here on the boards that they ahve actually done a balance inquiry at the ships ATM and not gotten charged.

In this case my card activation says to call from any touch tone number or to perform any transaction at an ATM. Yes, I have received them too & said to call from your home phone.

In my experience, even though they tell you you have to activate from your home phone, it will work from other phones, it just requires human intervention to verify some other piece of information besides your phone number (likey your mother's maiden name or something). Takes a couple of minutes longer, but it still works.

 

Otherwise you would never be able to activate a card if your phone number changed since the time your CC issuer last updated your account.

The OP was only asking about activating her card. Don't know if a bal. inquiry can be done from the ship ATM. So no help on the question. But re: the fee of $6.00. If you want $100, best get it from the Purser or casino cashier for the 3% fee. At $ 200. its a wash with the ATM. Over $200 the ATM's flat fee is better than Carnival's 3% fee. When we need cash, we usually use the ATM for $500. The casino would charge $15.00 for that amount.
