Can you suggest some additional shots (photos) in which you think the photographer should be asked to take prior to the ceremony? I want to have a compile list ahead of time.

The first section wont do much good. I dont know a photographer in the world that wont take those photos. I would limit your list to the NON-Obvious shots such as specific locations on the ship you love, etc...If your photographer doesnt get you exchanging rings, kissing, first dance, toast, etc... then you hired the wrong person. LOL Seriously, its confusing to get a list a mile long of shots you want only to have to weed through it to find shots a good photographer would not have already thought of. Then again, if you are using the ship photographer, then you may want to include that list. Those are typically kids from foreign countries getting paid minimum wage. They are probably as nervous as you are.

If you have to tell a wedding photographer what they need to take pics of, then I would be worried that they aren't professionals. These people do this for a living, and I would hope that you can expect a little more then that!

Their job is to document your day as it goes by, so you have those memories- you shouldn't have to do this!

I have been a wedding photographer for over 10 years and was a destination bride when I got married. I disagree with the posts that say a suggested shot sheet is not necessary. There are some traditional stock shots but not every bride is the same: some brides do not want photos of the bridesmaids walking down the aisle, some brides want an individual photo of each bridal party member to give as a gift, the photographer needs to know these things.

We get the stock stuff, but if certain aspects are really important to a client and she lets me know this, I'll emphasize these elements for her package. The photographer has a very finite amount of time (2-3 hours in your case) to capture as many memories as possible of a very special day. Myself, I want to spend the time getting the things that I know matter to my client than waste time on items that she may not want and find out all too late that she had a different idea in mind. I've heard of too many disappointed brides saying that the photographer did not capture the things that they wanted. Avoid being one of those brides! A must have list is great. If you have poses from a wedding magazines that you like, make copies of those. The photographer can do something similar to that, too.

Details shots are important, alot of time and love went into making this day: shots of the favors, ice sculpture, a best friend signing a guest book, the bride and groom clasping hands during the ceremony, the reaction of the guests during the ceremony (especially the family members) even the food believe it or not! The day passes by so quickly for all brides but especially for the destination bride who has maybe 2 hours for a reception. Sometimes it's hard to take it all in and you want all of these memories. Help the photographer make that possible for you! That way you'll get all that you want and most likely even more!

here's my website (no I'm not campaigning for business as cruise ships have their own very capable photographers) This might give you some ideas, too tamaralawhead dot com.

Best wishes to all of you ladies. I hope your wedding day and your photos are among your most prized treasures!

Ok I'll put in my 2 cents....

I am also a wedding photographer (full-time) and I am opposite the previous poster. I do NOT work off shot lists. It even says that in my contract. However the reason is that I am not a traditional photographer. I am there as a artist and a storyteller and I capture moments as they happen and insert my creative ideas as well. A shot list takes me out of the moment and I concentrate on checking off a list rather than BEING there and getting the moments not just a picture.

Thanks! This is what I loved about our photograher! They got amazing candid shots that we love, rather then stopping us and telling us to pose!

I saw your slideshow- nice work!!:D

My suggestion would be to make sure he/she takes multipe shots of each photo. That was the best thing about my daughters photographer (not on a cruise ship) he took over 500 photos, MANY of them duplicates, but many of them terrible, someones eyes closed, mouth open, looking the wrong way. So make sure there are a number of shots of same thing and that way you will be sure you will have a good one to choose.

I would definitely compile your list and give it to the photographer when he or she has plenty of time to review it.

Everyone here has to remember that these on board photographers are truly a crap shoot. No one knows a thing about their credentials. it is quite possible that this will be the very first wedding that your photographer has ever shot!

That said, I always heard it was good etiquette to take a pic of the bride and groom with each "table" at the reception.

Since you most likely wont have "tables" at your wedding reception, have them take a pic with each guest/group of guests that attend.

Think about who you addressed the invitations too.....

If you sent an invitation to the Anderson family, get a shot of Bride, groom and the Anderson family. If you sent an invitation to Mike Smith & Guest, be sure to get a shot of Bride, groom, Mike Smith and guest.

I hope this makes sense.

I found that the ship photographer took all the shots listed by the OP,the basics. A list of the must have shots is a good idea.. Remember you won't meet with your photographer until minutes before your ceremony. Others have said they fax, e-mail, send etc. ahead of time but I think most will agree that your photographer on the day of your wedding will not have or even have seen was had been sent weeks or months before.
