Treven Posted May 19, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2004 The ship I'll be on will be in Juneau for tentative 8: a.m. till 10: p.m. Does anyone know if: 1. Is there reliable transportation from Juneau to Skagway & back? 2, If there is, is the White Horse & Yukon Railway (at least up to the summit) do-able? 3. Approx distance between Juneau & Skagway? 4. Is it worthwhile doing? Yukon Posted May 19, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 19, 2004 The only way you could do it is to fly, as there is no fast water service in that direction. You can find a list of aircraft operators at http://www.explorenorth.com/library/communities/alaska/bl-skagwaylinks2.htm Is it worth it? Only if you really, really, really want to ride the train - there's lots to do in Juneau. Murray
Alaska Star Posted May 19, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 19, 2004 There is a new Fairweather with Alaska Marine Highway that goes from Juneau directly to Skagway starting this year. You would have to look at the schedule to figure out if it would work for you. I beleive it takes less than 2 hours to Skagway one way. The flight from Juneau to Skagway is about 45 minutes and can be beautiful on a clear day. There are several airlines that do this daily and they could meet you at your ship - airlines are Skagway Air, Wings of Alaska or LAB. Whether it's worth it? Truly subjective. But you could do it. Treven Posted May 19, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted May 19, 2004 BUMMER!! Having never been to Alaska I've absolutely no comprehension of distances. Guess I'm not gonna "ride the rails"!! Thanks much for your input, I do appreciate your responses. CruiseIsGood Posted May 19, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2004 You can't see everthing in one trip, which is why so many of us go back so often. Consider this an excuse to book another! I went last year and the year before, and wanted to go this year to see all those things I missed, but work and my friend's vineyard made it impossible. So we're going in 2005. And perhaps 2006, 2007, ....
