QE2 propellers

I was trawling around the internet and found the following picture. I was wondering, what is the "extra" sharply pitched propeller in front of the main props for? I have not seen this before.

Any ideas?

"Note: The Grim Wheels were short lived. They lost blades on an early trip following the refit and were removed, never to be replaced."

"QE2 is the first passenger ship to use Grim Wheels (so called because they were invented by Dr Ing Otto Grim) in an attempt to make the new QE2 even more efficient. These wheels spin freely in the wake of the main propellers. The innermost parts of each of the 7 blades pick up speed from the propeller, while the outermost parts act as propellers themselves, adding some forward motion to the ship for "free", capturing energy which would otherwise be wasted. The Grim Wheels are 6.7 meters in diameter."

How old is that picture? According to http://www.roblightbody.com/liners/qe-2/1987_Refit/index.htm they were added during the 1986-87 refit and removed shortly thereafter. BTW they are called Grim wheels, after the inventor, and are free-spinning propellers that are supposed to increase thrust because the inner portion acts as a turbine powered by the main propeller wake while the outer portion acts as an additional propeller.

Some of these as you say PB82 were indeed lost during her Maiden Voyage after the refit in 86/87. If you think the vibration is bad now, you should have been onboard for that trip! the vibration then was very bad indeed, but the actual crossing was fun, for all the wrong reasons

cheers

Hello!

In answer to your question, these are called Grim Wheels (named after their inventor, Dr. Ing Otto Grim). QE2 is the first pax ship to use them, but they were short-lived, as some of the blades fell off on a trip soon after they were put on (during the 86/87 refit). The point of these Grim Wheels is to make a ship more efficient: the wheels spin freely in the wake of the main props, thus adding some forward motion to the ship by capturing energy which would otherwise be wasted.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, hadn't realised Sir Martin hadn't made it to the main board - he is so omni present in the roll calls that I forgot not every one would know his story :D

For a catch-up (cos you are unlikely to have a week to spare to read the associated roll calls to get the full story of Sir Martin & his elevation from simple domestic moggie to member of parliament, peer of the realm (he tried for the royal family but didn't make it) & icon of the QE2/QM2:D )

is anyone else thinking about the ginger cat:D

Yes:) Although I try not to:D

For a catch-up ......

You must have been going through the many roll calls for days if you've come up with the posts that introduced that cat (I say if because I haven't actually followed your links - If I did I would spend hours bursting into fits of laughter).

Just think though - that thing must be mincemeat by now so you should really put RIP after its name (Although TIH - Tormented In Hell - would be more suitable:D )

Actually they are only some of the posts that relate to the propeller - using CC search they were easy to find - the others would have taken far too long to find - the potted review was from memory, so feel free to update it if I missed anything.:) (I know I missed his penchant for selling things that don't belong to him - famous palaces and castles for example;) )

If anyone would like to find all the Sir Martin posts, especially re his rise to fame, it would be great:D We could make it into a book:eek:.

I ended up reading 2 pages of the May 6th roll call again, & yes I was in fits of laughter once again, I had to force myself to stop else I would have spent all day in there. (& I came across much funnier posts than the ones i actually linked to:rolleyes: )
