Fun~N~Sun Posted August 20, 2007 #26 Share Posted August 20, 2007 I soooooooo wanted to feel the "motion of the ocean" when we went on our Destiny cruise but I can say that I could not even tell we were on the water. I never once felt any movement at all from the water while we were on the ship. I was disappointed. I almost wanted there to be a thunderstorm or something one evening to churn up some waves but no luck. :(
romy Posted August 20, 2007 #27 Share Posted August 20, 2007 Patch or Pill or some other ideas? Hi Westie, I've heard that the ginger pills work tremendously. Recently, someone told me there was some sort of test where people were given several different types of remedies and the ginger worked far better than any of the motion sickness meds. The only time I had any sea sickness was when we were way forward. Never again, always mid-ship. Hope this helps! Happy Sails!!! Romy

Amlee Posted August 20, 2007 #29 Share Posted August 20, 2007 My room is on the Upper Verandah and towards the front. I'm hoping the rocking won't be to bad but I love the rocking motion to put me to sleep also. My last cruise we were caught in a bad storm. I was sleeping soundly. My roommate woke me up thinking we were about ready to tip over. Guess we were rocking pretty bad but it made me sleep like a baby so I'm to worried about my room location. Last Nov my mother, grandmother and myself sailed on the Mariner of the Seas. We had 20 foot waves. Our room was the first verandah at the front of the ship on deck 7. The ship was rocking in all directions, but you could REALLY feel the ship when it would sink down into a wave and then when it would crest the top of one. One night we when started up a wave, we climb and climb and climb. We then started down the other side of it. My mother asked are we ever going to come up out of this? I set up in bed, raised my arms and yelled WEEEEEEEEEE!!! Like you would if you were on a rollar coaster. But what stopped my grandmother from going out on the verandah was when the waves started hitting the side of the ship and spraying us from our room. I honestly got up at one point, to make sure we still had a verandah, as it sounded like it had fallen off. The next morning at breakfast the captain was in line at the buffet. I had to stop and think him for the rollar coaster ride.
Amlee Posted August 20, 2007 #30 Share Posted August 20, 2007  Off to Alaska on Sunday.Last Cruise in Caribbean , on the Navigator of the Seas, this time Noordam. Very sea sick after 1st nites sleep.on calm waters in Caribbean, I like the rocking , but it doesn't like me....Help, I want to be one that is not afraid to go to sleep....any ideas????Do you eat before bed, no drinks, Navy people, you must have some tricks up your sleeve to avoid sea sickness??? Ginger Root that you buy in a capsule works great for sea sickness. You can get them at GNC or wal-mart.
martinimadam Posted August 20, 2007 #31 Share Posted August 20, 2007 Westie - here's what I do. Start taking dramamine the night before the cruise. Then take it every night just before bedtime. Sleep like a baby and never sick, and I've been in some pretty rough seas. Another thing that helps is to get out in the fresh air. On the ferry ride across the North Sea from England to Ireland (land trip and before my first cruise) was in the pub with my mom (celebrating her 75th birthday!). She suddenly looked at the couple next to us and asked them to watch our things, then said "Let's go outside and get some air". Apparently I was starting to turn a little green around the gills. Hadn't noticed it, yet. Once out in the fresh air I was cured. Mothers, they know everything!
sho Posted August 20, 2007 #32 Share Posted August 20, 2007 Having read all the posts in this thread, I must be one of the few who dread the rocking and rolling of the ship! Any movements or semi-rough sea will wake me up in the middle of the night. I certainly had many sleepless nights cruising in bad weather. In fact the best sleep I ever had on a cruise were the 3 nights when our ship docked at St Petersburg last summer!
Westie1 Posted August 20, 2007 #33 Share Posted August 20, 2007 I got ill on my last cruise and it was not even noticeably rocking. $1000.later and a IV I felt better, just trying to not repeat this. We are off to Alaska, I have heard various things about the seas. Martinimadam spelled it out exactly for me. I will use the bonine again, I only seem to have problems when I sleep. And yes, mothers do know everything:) . Sho, I did use bonine before, but it has been so long I needed to be reassured it will work....I really really want to enjoy being rocked to sleep:rolleyes: . yellowbird23 Posted August 20, 2007 #34 Share Posted August 20, 2007 I like the peaceful rocking, but only on one of my cruises, specifically when I was travelling solo, I got extremely nauseated right before dinner so missed idinner because of it I did take a Bonine? and felt much better within a few minutes. Another time, I guess our first cruise, I felt woozy in the casino and my husband told me we were just starting to sail again. Hence, it didn't last long. amenuensis Posted August 21, 2007 #35 Share Posted August 21, 2007 Yes I love the rocking motion too. It's one of the aspects of cruising I love best. So soothing. Also as far as seasickness goes, I really believe my body adjusted to the movement after the first day. So I only needed dramamine the first day and I did not have to use it after that. Then when you get back on dry land, don't you all still feel like you're stll rocking for a day or two?
gizmo Posted August 21, 2007 #36 Share Posted August 21, 2007 I don't like it. It makes me dizzy. One person in our group has a hard time walking when the ship is rocking. Rocking is not so wonderful for her.
EggDropErin Posted August 21, 2007 #37 Share Posted August 21, 2007 LOL I cannot even enjoy the rocking of a rocking chair. I get motion sick so easily, I couldn't swing on a swingset for more than 5 minutes at a time as a child. :D
Caliber1 Posted August 21, 2007 #38 Share Posted August 21, 2007 Then when you get back on dry land, don't you all still feel like you're stll rocking for a day or two? I don't notice it so bad after a short one, but after A 7 or 8 day, it took a while.
RachieLnnn Posted August 21, 2007 #39 Share Posted August 21, 2007 I love the rocking!!! It's most fun when you're out and about on the ship and start slamming into hallways, etc. ;) :D It can be pretty funny. I've never had really rough waves though. Next trip we are way up at the front of the boat, but we will be in Hawaii where I've heard the waves aren't too bad. I guess we'll see!
MiBoater Posted August 22, 2007 #40 Share Posted August 22, 2007 We are boaters and we experience that rocking motion every weekend from April -November along with 2 weeks of summer vacation and our yearly cruise! It is no doubt the biggest thing that I yearn for come February when our lake is frozen over and our cruise is 2 months away!
RetiredMustang Posted August 22, 2007 #41 Share Posted August 22, 2007
 ... Do you eat before bed, no drinks, Navy people, you must have some tricks up your sleeve to avoid sea sickness???
Westie1, I'm sorry, I missed checking this thread yesterday. I'm also afraid I can't help much. I have never gotten motion sickness, even in a storm at sea, so I have never had to take any drugs or use tricks. I have read it has something to do with how my inner ears are put together, or something like that, but I don't get seasick -- the Navy would have been a poor choice of career if I did!
