Turtle Farm on my own?

I will be in Grand Cayman next week during my cruise on Carnival's Liberty. Our family would like to visit the Turtle farm and we were considering just taking a cab to the farm on our own, instead of booking thru the cruise line.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We are a group of 9 total, 4 adults and 5 children.

Can't answer but let us know how you like it. We have pretty much decided to skip this as 60% are killed for food  I assume they don't tell the children which groups are tagged for "life" vs "death"?

I originally wanted to go because we have pet Tortoises.

Actually, I think the % raised for consumption is higher than 60%. There is a reason it is call the Turtle FARM, just like at a pig farm, the turtles are mostly raised for human consumption which is an accepted practice in the Cayman Islands.

We tried to do exactly what you are planning - go just to the Turtle Farm. We could not find a taxi to take us just there. On every other island you can get a taxi to take you anywhere you want to go but not on Cayman. It was the beach OR whole tour or nothing. We finally walked away from the dock and found a cab driver that was getting fares away from the dock - probably an rengade, but he did have a real taxi. He said he would take us to just the turtle farm and he did .... but we spent 2 HOURS there while he took another couple on their regular tour and then their turtle farm tour.

Maybe others have had better luck OR you can book something before you go, but this was our experience.

Thanks. I really don't want to book thru the cruise line because we have already done it that way and I know that I can save some money doing it on our own.

Do you think that 30 minutes is enough time to visit the turtle farm? All the tours that I've seen online only stay for about 30 minutes and I thought that might not be enough time.
