CruisnLion Posted August 21, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2007 From what I can tell the Mayan ruins in Tulum are approx 100 miles north of the center of Dean. Does anyone have experience with how this might affect conditions there? We have an excursion booked through Princess but are considering canceling? Thanks for your input! gtalum Posted August 21, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2007 My understanding is that in Playa del Carmen, they had some high winds but no damage. Tulum is only ~30 miles south of there. I doubt there will be any significant damage.
DAO Posted August 21, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2007 These ruins are like a 1000 years old. They have probably been through more than one hurricane. The only issue would probably be the condition of the road to get there. Roads down there are built quick and cheap. My guess is that they would wash out easily. Keep the trip...if they can't get you there they aren't going to charge you. I bet it will take a few days to figure all this out.
melgray13 Posted August 21, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2007 CNN interviewed a guy today from Tulum and he said that there was very little damage. Everything should be good - at worst maybe a rainy day for your visit.
Susie51 Posted August 26, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 26, 2007 Thanks for the info. I hope the roads are good so you can enjoy your excusion. In addition to the ruins, there is also a "flying pole dance" at Tulum. The dancers with a rope tied to them leap off of a very high tower and spin around the pole. qaperson Posted September 3, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 3, 2007 I read in another thread that Carnival cancelled their Tulum excursion due to the roads. I've posted a question to see if anyone has more information. I hope someone does!
