Venice airport help

Recommended Posts

We booked with www.motoscafivenezia.it but had to make our own way to the dock along the covered walkway (5 minutes at least) - I never saw trollies or portering service. We then showed our paperwork to one of the men milling around the dock and he directed us to the right place. I must admit it was a little chaotic til we actually got on the boat :( .Next time we are going to get the airport bus to Piazzale Roma, leave the bulk of our luggage at the left luggage office then catch a vaporetto carrying only an overnight bag.

Also check with your cruise line. Our cruise line (MSC) charges $18 for a direct transfer from the Venice airport to the ship. We can't use this service on the return since we are staying an extra night in Venice but you can't beat the price/convenience for the transfer to the ship .

To Olga77, There is no direct route from the airport to Station Marittima. You would have to get off at San Marco and switch to their boat that goes directly to the pier. It may cost another fare to do that, I'm not sure. We used that route 2 days later to get to our ship. If you are going from the airport directly to the pier, you best bet would be to take the bus to Pizalle Roma and a cab to the pier which is only a 10 minute ride from P. Roma.

The bus that also holds your luggage underneath is only 3 Euros to Piazzale Roma from Marco Polo Airport. It picks up right outside the exit doors. From Piazza Roma there is usually a free shuttle bus run by the cruise port. We could not find it - heard it may not run on Saturdays when we were embarking - so we took the city bus for 1 Euro that let us off right across from the port entrance. It is LESS than a 10 minute ride from Piazzale Roma to the cruise port as we walked it in reverse pulling our wheeled luggage after our cruise!

We are planning the cheap bus. It does not look all that difficult. Since we are getting in a day early... I have a whole day to find my hotel. Oh wait, I do not have a hotel yet. I am thinking that maybe I should book my hotel soon.

Our group took the water taxis directly from Marco Polo airport, and it's the best way to get to Venice, which emerges from a low-lying line of buildings on the horizon to individual buildings, canals, and bridges.

When you exit the airport, go to your left. The water taxis are about a 4 block walk over both sidewalk and semi-smooth cobblestones and pavers. We walked it, so I don't know if there's any other way. We also had made prior arrangements, so someone met us at baggage pickup to escort us. But there were definitely water taxis for hire, with drivers waiting.

Cost is unknown, thus my "partial help" title. You could try Alba Travel at 39-041-521-0123. They're the ones who arranged our transfers, although it's not clear if they would handle this. Their guides were extremely friendly and helpful. You could probably find the cost info on the web, too.

Ask if your hotel has a private dock for water taxis, and if they're on the Canal Grande, they probably do, and can also help you make arrangements for transfer by water from the airport. Others in our party who arrived earlier in the week were transferred by mini-van from the airport and then to a water taxi, but that's a very different experience, they said, than what ours sounded like. And don't forget the to tip the water taxi driver a few euros, 4-5 being appropriate according to our guide, but then again, we had a ton of luggage for four of us.

We flew into Venice two years ago, and will return in September. First, you wait in line to report lost luggage. One office for all airlines. Well, it did happen to us (Delta). Next, Venice airport is not large. There is a water taxi desk, and another desk for multi-day bus or waterbus passes. Everyone behind the desks parlano anglaise. The water taxi desk guy said "the wait is too long." He explained how to take the bus (with what luggage we had) to the water bus, which we did, after getting the bus tickets from the other desk. We were dropped off at Ca D'oro, which was a block from our hotel, Foscari Palace. Delta sent our luggage the next day via water taxi. Must have cost them a bundle. We took a water taxi from the hotel to the cruise ship (90E), and a prearranged limo from the cruise ship to the airport (cheaper and quicker than the cruise ship bus).

Yes, luggage carts were available. We did not use them as it appeared that you had to pay a fee and all our luggage had wheels anyway.

The luggage carts had a 50 cent coin slot, fortunately there was a loose one because we didn't have a coin with us.

I am guessing it might be a different rate to the pier--which is at the top of the (inverted?) "S" of the Grand Canal--than to hotels at the lower part, down toward San Marco. I have been to Venice three times in the past five years, and have taken a water taxi from the airport two of the three times, and both times it was 80 euros, once to a hotel between Accademia and Rialto bridges, once to a San Marco hotel. From what I've heard that is standard.

  • 2 weeks later...

I asked for quotes from four, water taxi companies, and received responses ranging from $172 to $206 for four people with three suitcases each (two large, one small).

The most expensive quote included a private limo from the airport to the bus station followed by a private water taxi to our hotel in Venice.

Has anyone done this? We are interested in the easiest and most convenient transfer.

I got a quote from Motoscafivenenzia of 120 Euro for 2 people and 3 bags. When I tried to confirm this with flight info that they asked for, I got no response. I also tried for a quote from Venezia Taxi which is the company suggested by Locando Orseolo. No response at all. We're leaving in three weeks so hopefully there won't be a problem with getting a water taxi. I would feel better with a reservation though.

Joan, I asked for and received quotes very quickly from these:

Venicewelcome.com (95 euro, up to four passengers + fee for luggage, the best price of all)

Airportshuttle.com

Limousineandriver.com (land and water taxis)

Motoscafivenezia.it

We are on the cruise following yours and hope to have this in place before we leave too.
