We are sailing on the Diamond Princes from Los Angeles on October 19. We received an emergency notification from Princess that "the port will be extremely busy with multiple cruise ships in port." Because of this they advise "that adequate facilities are not available at the pier to accommodate passengers who arrive prior to 12:00 pm. In addition, passengers arriving by car prior to 12:00 pm will not be permitted enter the port."

From what we can tell, the only other ship that is going to be in Los Angeles that day is Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas, which is in every Friday and Monday.

According to the port operator, this port has the capability of handling three ships at one time. There are often at least two ships in Los Angeles at one time. Why is Princess sending out this notification? Apparently they were told this by the port operator.

Does any one have insight regarding this situation?

Their are two ships scheduled in that day. The Monarch of the Seas and the Diamond Princess. http://www.pcsterminals.com/CruiseCalendar.aspx

Two ships docked there at a time seems to be pretty normal. The port has berth 91/92 and berth 93, each with lots of check in and luggage space. http://www.pcsterminals.com/Default.aspx?mod=bs91

Several times I've received an emergency notification for the Caribbean Princess out of Fort Lauderdale saying not to show up before 2:00 pm. I've always been able to get on the port around 10:30 and get a seat inside while I wait for the boarding to start. Usually by 11:30 the inside is full and people start lining up outside in the heat.

Unless they are also including the Paradise (which will be berthed in Long Beach on the same date).

On our docs for the last cruise, it said not to arrive prior to 1pm. We got there at 12:15pm and immediately were escorted to an available check-in clerk. After going through security, we were in the line to get our photo taken and to go onboard.

I think they just want to ensure that the previous ships' passengers got off and are out of the terminal. But I wouldn't worry about it. Odds are, you can at least go inside and sit in the waiting area.

It may not be a matter of how many ships are in port.....it may be an issue of getting the debarking passengers off and out of the way.......before admitting the arriving passengers into the facility.

I agree with the above poster. I am on the Diamond cruise after the OP's cruise and I also found that exact same notification on my cruise personalizer. I checked the port schedule and there are only two ships on the day that we embark. The cruiselines are always telling us to not come until after noon but every cruise that we have been on we get there at around 11:00a.m.-11:30a.m. and there are loads of people arriving early just like us. Now there are times that we had to wait because of the previous disembarkation but most of the time they let us on.

My experience with Princess hotel packages is that the Princess shuttle will often, but not always, arrive at the cruise terminals around 10:30 am. In April, on the Emerald, late flight disembarking passengers, were told to wait in the Casino. All of them were off by around 1 p.m.

We typically arrive at the terminal between 10 am and 11 am and often are happily aboard by noon. This way we can get a free Princess lunch and a nap.
