Smoking Versus Non-Smoking (not a debate)

Ok, so I'll shoot for two questions for the night (see upgrade post).

As once again, a first time Carnival Cruiser, what is Carnival's policy on smoking in rooms? Is it allowed?

I question because I don't really care what others may choose to do, but more so for both my partner's and my personal health. We both have strong allergies to smoke and I would hate to be in a room that someone just smoked in (sorry, no carpet cleaning and air deorderizers cut smoke in a matter of a few hours of cleaning).

Anyone have any experience with this? Should we contact our TA and make sure this won't be an issue?

How good can you detect it? I can't but my wife can a mile away. She will bring febreeze and spray everything. On our Glory cruise last week, she wiped down the walls and had the first steward get new pillows as she detected it in the pillows.

To those that said the op should do a search on these boards for smoking how in the world would they do that when all the smoking threads get pulled?

Well said. I hate when I do a search for something I know I have seen, but it can't be found. Threads do get "poofed".

I also have never smelled smoke in my cabin.

Just talked to my PVP yesterday and he said that all ships, idustry wide are going to be going to smoke-free rooms in the future. When the future is, I don't know. I was asking about a May, 2008 cruise and he wasn't sure if it'd be in effect yet.

Second thought, as a smoker myself, I will not smoke in my room as a courtesy to the others I share a room with. Also, I'd say if you have a balcony room, most people that had the room before you probably used the balcony to smoke on.

And... I guess I didn't think about the smoke drifting to the cabin next to me if I'm out on the balcony. Not sure where I thought the smoke would go!

Just my 2 cents worth!

hhmmmm do a search on the Carnival forum and use the word smoking...and see what comes up....it seems not all threads get poofed! I'm not sure why so many come up and if they all have to do with smoking but there are a few in there that do....

I've never had an issue with this on my cruises. If it really concerns you, I'd suggest bringing a bottle of Febreeze Allergen (or whatever it's called). I use that around my house since we have a small zoo of cats & dogs. Maybe that will help with the smell & the allergens. I pack Febreeze for our clothes because DH will wear the same dress pants a few times & invariably they end up smelling smoky from a bar or the casino.

Ok, maybe its just the "newbie" status, but people seem very short on this board.

It was an honest question, and canceling is not an option as I depart in about 3 weeks. I guess part of this is my fault for not thinking of this sooner, I am not used to places being smoking, I live in NY, which is very smoke free for the most part, most of the hotels I've ever stayed at are smoke free and the trip before my cruise I am going park hopping at Disney for a week, which too is almost 100% smoke free.

Again, this wasn't intended to stir up debate or animousity, but it seems this is a real sore subject for a few members on this board.

In regards to comment above above about being allergic to smoke smell, it's not the smell as it is the smoke itself, and smoke attaches itself to any soft surface, so it will set off our allergies and overall provide not such a nice experience.

For those that have posted and said the TA and Carnival will do nothing, have you ever tried or spoken to either about this situation? I think I will give my TA a call today just to see her opinion and maybe conference in Carnival.

You ask a question and you get answers. The answers are typed, not spoken. Many of us speak much better than we type. You get very little flowery language with the typed word. But there is a review you could peruse if you want verbosity, many have enjoyed reading it.:D But I digress. The answers you've received, tho short in your estimation, are accurate. That you don't like the answers, is your problem. And we have no way to help you with that. Strange too that its OK for you to say the people here give short answers, but you choose to ignore the answers and will check elsewhere for the answers you wish to hear. Not our fault. As others have said, in an evidently unkind manner, if your problem with smoke is that bad why did you not do due diligence long before now. And why berate us for that oversight on your part. There is no non-smoking cruise line or ship at present. They have existed in the past, but failed. What commentary that is, I don't know. There have/are ships [not Carnival] that have one side cabins non-smoking, the other smoking permitted. I'm a non-smoker, not a rigid zealot but just a non-smoker, and have never bothered to see if I was in a smoking or non cabin because the smell has never been a problem. Hope your other efforts give you the answers you want to hear.

Although I have never smelled smoke in my cabin I will concur with LHP in that the hallways are sometimes very smokey.

I find the mornings to be esp bad, because it seems that everyone is having their morning smoke at the same time.

Also the casino area is also VERY smokey. You don't even have to go into the casino to smell it.

Some of the clubs are non-smoking like the karyoke lounge, but others like the disco allow smoking.

I don't suffer from allergies or any resp. disease so the smoke smell really doesn't bother me, I just found it to be VERY pronounced in the above areas.

So, avoid the casino and the disco and plan to cover your nose and mouth when exiting your cabin in the morning and you should be OK.

Happy Cruising!

Just to think, a few years ago smoking was allowed in the dining room.

I remember as a small child going to the movies and there was a smoking section. With the ventilation those days, basically that meant that the entire theatre was smoking. I also remember smoking sections on air planes. Kind of funny to be on the last row of the "non-smoking" section. My Mom was a chain smoker, so it was everywhere I went in those days. Seemed just like a normal part of life.

True. But Oceania's policies are pretty strict, so the OP may want to check this line out for his/her next cruise:

What is the smoking policy of Oceania Cruises?

For the safety and security of all guests and staff onboard, Designated Smoking Areas are available on Deck 9, the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck, and Deck 10, in the aft, port corner of Horizons. These areas are comfortably furnished and conveniently located near food and beverage areas.

Smoking is expressly forbidden in all Staterooms and Suites, on verandas, or in any areas of the ship other than officially Designated Smoking Areas. Guests choosing to disregard this policy will be disembarked at the next port of call and may also be subject to additional fees that will be imposed to cover the costs associated with any damage to and the required cleaning of furnishings, verandas and surrounding deck and accommodation areas.

I can also remember people smoking EVERYWHERE! The movie theater had a cloud above the seats, you could smoke while shopping at the mall, people would smoke up and down the aisles of the supermarket, and the smoking section on the airplane, what a joke, the whole airplane smelled like a bar room. And the best of it all you could smoke in the doctor's office and in your hospital room (only if you were not on oxygen).

Then we'd get chewed out about their prices, limited number of ships, and itineraries. To me the non-smoking jihadists are just tiresome. And the "I have a right to smoke" whiners are just as bad.

I do not see a debate, i think this thread is going very well so far!

As far as calling your TA & Carnival, it won't help, they are not going to clear the ship of all smokers because you can't be around it.

The Smoke in the cabins is next to none as everyone on this thread had said.

The only smokey place in the ship is the Casino & cigar bar.

The disco is also a smoking area but i have never found it to be to smokey.
