scubaran Posted September 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 5, 2007 I purchased our own snorkel gear at Sams Club and know I need to do something to prepare it before we go...but I don't know what that something is. :D So...could someone help me out on that? Thanks! Tracy First thing is to clean your mask. In producing the mask lens they use an oil which will cause fogging the first time you dive. Go get some "regular" paste toothpaste (I use colgate) and, using a paper towel, scrub the inside and outside of the lens with them (this is a mild abrasive and will "clean off" the oil). I scrub, rinse, pat dry, scrub, rinse for each lens and inside/out (takes about 15-20 minutes per mask). As far as the snorkel, make sure it attaches easily to the mask and shaking won't make it come off (BTW, they generally go on the left side of the strap on the mask from scuba days were the regulator came in over the right shoulder). That's about it. No maintenance on the snorkel otherwise. Once you come out of the ocean, rinse all the gear with fresh water, and get out any sand or other particulates you may have accumulated on them. Also don't use vaseline for a seal on the face if any of you have facial hair, it reacts with the silicone skirt of the mask. Randall

Stevesan Posted September 19, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 19, 2007 Buy a bottle of Sea Gold defogger. Very easy to apply and is effective. Just follow the label instructions, and don't use too much. I know, spit works too - but certainly not as well, nor is it as long lasting.
