A Black sand beach sounds interesting- Are there any faciilities at this beach?.....snorkelling? To get there from the pier is there a shuttle? Thanks for any further info you can offer about this beach.

There are restrooms and showers available at the Beach. The picture below shows an overview of the pier. It's about another half mile from the bottom of the picture. All along the way, you may see turtles. They love the coastline.
Leosmom Posted September 11, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Thanks HiloSunshine. I will consider this on our next cruise to Hawaii in November since we are only in Hilo for a a short time :)
Leosmom Posted September 11, 2007 #6 Share Posted September 11, 2007 Thank you HiloSunshine also for the great photo. We have been to VNP before and i think Richardson's will be a good place to spend a few hours....i did a search on the internet and it says that it is good for snorkelling also. My question is about the taxis. Do you know if we will have a problem getting one back to the where the ship docks? I am assuming all cruise ships dock at the same pier (we will be on the Diamond Princess). Also, since it is approx. a mile from the cruise ship pier, would it be feasible to walk back if we can't get a taxi? ( is the road walkable....it appears to be along the coastline). Thanks again for the info, and anymore you can add, Leosmom

You can even swim with the turtles there.
