My experience is that they are unreliable on the ship, depending on how much metal (decks, walls) you have between transmitter and receiver.

You should check local laws before using in port, although you can probably get away with a FRS radio with no trouble.

We've used them before and will use them for upcoming cruise. No problems on board and had no trouble in ports. I guess it depends on how long the range is. BTW, we are adults and used them sparingly so as not to disturb anyone around us.

-- these were "5 mile" GMRS radios. A waste of luggage space IMO. I would leave 'em home and use the voice mail system or post-its.

You certainly CAN use them and I highly recommend it, if you want to stay in touch...just be respectful of your neighbors. ;)
