There is a small straw market at the dock. Town is quite a ways away, over 5 miles. Taxis are waiting, in March 2006 it was $5 a person into town where there was a bigger straw market, the beach, Our Lucaya resort with casino, shopping area and lots of ladies wanting to braid your hair.:D Taxi stand is by the straw market or make arrangements with driver before you get out.

It is much farther than 5 miles. (probably 5 miles just to get out of the oil refinieries, industrial area to the low income workers neighborhood past it.)

It is a 20 minute or so cab ride to get to Our Lucaya, but it is well worth it.

Our first trip to Freeport, we stayed on the ship and went down to the pathetic little fake market area built by the cruislines.

Our 2nd trip, we got off, caught a quick cab to Our Lucaya (you just have to wait until they fill the van up before they will leave. At their gas prices, I can't blame them at all)

For $5 each way per person, it is well worth it for the gorgeous white soft sand beach or the very nice shopping area, with straw markets at either end if you prefer that kind of shopping.

If you are the adventourous type, you can walk 15 min to the nearest local min bus stop (walk straight out the gate and turn right when you reach stop sign, bus stop on your right). It's then a 10 min wait and a 10 min ride into town.

We enjoyed riding with the locals through their neigbourhoods to and from Lucaya. Last May, we saved $4 to $5 per person times 4 people doing this as we refused to pay the captive audience taxi rate.

Of course we spent our savings before we got back onboard the ship!

Well I'm a big fan of using local / public transportation and have done so in cities around the world. But the $5 per person shared-taxi ride from the cruise port to the Port Lucaya Marketplace / Our Lucaya Resort is a huge bargain. There aren't very many $5 cab rides anywhere and this is close to a 30-minute drive for the money.
