loobylouuk Posted October 6, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2007 Hi, I know this should normally be a question posted on the destinations thread but need specific advice regarding po excursions. Does anyone know where the coach drops off for the "Rome on your own" trip please. Many thanks Lou
Cabinboy1943 Posted October 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 7, 2007 Hi Lou The coach drops you off right by the Vatican. We did the Rome on your own and found the only way to see as much as possible in the time we had was to do the open top bus. Most main venues are about 30 minutes walk apart. We waited an hour to get on a bus and did'nt dare get off anywhere because of the trouble of getting back on. At least we saw most of it but to do the place justice you really need about three days. haggis Posted October 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 7, 2007 Good morning Lou, Just back off the Arcadia and thought we would be very brave and go into Rome on the train. We were a bit apprehensive about it but, as luck would have it, met up with two waiters off the ship on the way to the station and followed their advice. They had done it often and knew the ropes. Well, it was a dawdle. Train tickets return cost E9 which covered train, underground and bus for the day. Got off the train at San Pietro and after a 10 minute walk was in the Vatican Sq. Train took 45 minutes and as it was a Wednesday, the Pope was in the square giving his blessings. We were there a good hour before the busues appeared and by that time the Pope had departed. Never used the underground or buses but will the next time with some more research. Jimmy

You buy a B.I.G. ticket at Civitiveccchia and that covers your return train and also the Rome subway. David

Cabinboy1943 Posted October 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 7, 2007 Hi Lou When we got the open top bus we walked down the street that leads up to the Vatican. Do not know the name. Bus stop was on the left hand side. There is a small shop on the opposite side of the road that sells the tickets for the bus. Might get you on one a bit quicker. regards cabinboy
