spanisheyes Posted October 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2007 We are Brits travelling to Canada, and will be wamting to hire a car when we dock at Ballantyne. Does anybody know if an IDP is essential. It was mentioned on one hire site. We have never had one in the States or anywhere else we have travelled. We want a one way rental and are finding it difficult to get one from the dock to Banff. Any ideas please?
Acey Posted October 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 8, 2007 An IDP is recommended, but not required. However the car rental agency may want it anyhow so I would directly ask the car rental agency about their requirements. The IDP can overcome any difficulties related to differing licensing requirements that you may encounter. It is also a useful precautionary measure to take even if not required. In general car rental agencies in Canada do not specialize in one-way rentals - and if they do, because of the vast distance between Vancouver and Banff, the recovery fee to get the car back to Vancouver will probably be prohibitively expensive. Have you considered the train from Vancouver to Banff? http://www.rockymountaineer.com/
spanisheyes Posted October 8, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted October 8, 2007 Thanks for a prompt reply. We will be going to Vancouver Island straight after the cruise, then driving up to Jasper and Banff, taking the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver, and then spending a week in Vancouver. Not been to Canada before, so really looking forward to this holiday. But it seems an awful long time to wait until next May.

You might have slightly more luck one-way Vancouver to Calgary with the rental. Viv
