Maui Walking

We are porting in at Kahului and have a car rented for one day. Wonder if anyone knows if there is anything within walking distance of the pier? Would love to go to Lahaina for the day. Seems like the public bus system would also get us there. It is pretty much on time and reliable? Or maybe we should include Lahaina on the "car" day and walk around the next day. We are used to walking on average 10-15 miles daily. Any suggestions would be great.

Not a whole lot within walking distance (at least what I consider walking distance) unless you consider Krispy Kreme and Macy's entertaining.

 

There are a few malls ... www.queenkaahumanucenter.com and www.mauimall.com which would probably be considered walking distance for you.

Thanks very much JerseyK. Mall is not on my ideal place to stroll to. Unfortunately, I was thinking long walk on a beach.... oh well. We will find something else fun and exciting.

There is not much in the immediate area of the pier BUT if you walk 10-15 miles a day, there are places within that walking distance from the ship. KANAHA BEACH is to the east of the pier and WAIEHU is north west has some rawer beaches. You can also walk to the IAO Needle in Wailuku Heights area, that would probably be about a 15 mile walk round trip (not exactly sure how far though). Iao Needle would be UP HILL all the way there and down hill back. There are also some shopping malls near the port in Kahului.

 

You're not going to be able to walk to Lahaina, it's on the other side of the island.

 

The attached map shows the area. Your ship will be docked in the Kahului Harbor.

Neojava.... thanks so much, the "hike" to Iao Needle is just the activity I was looking for! I going to check into that more closely.
