patty63 Posted October 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 17, 2007 How long does it take to drive around the island? Is there even a road that takes us around the entire perimeter of the island? What about a map....where is the best place to purchase a map? thank you!

tammymacb Posted October 17, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 17, 2007 When the boats are in, driving in Grand Cayman can be scary. It can take 20-30 mins to get from 7Mile to Sunset House when Georgetown is hopping. The drive to Rum Point will take more than an hour. Also, keep in mind you drive on the *wrong* side of the road, and lots of traffic circles.. Good Luck. mlbcruiser Posted October 18, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2007 I second what tammymacb said - traffic has been horrible everytime we've visited Grand Cayman - always by ship. The island is very flat and scrubby, and the prettiest places are the ones at water's edge. Otherwise they are from a boat - what's UNDER the water. So do yourself a favor. Visit 7 Mile Beach (it's easy to get a cab there). Or snorkel - form shore if you have to, but better yet, take an excursion via boat. Many local operators offer good excursions to both Stingray City and do one or two other stops for snorkeling.
gottago2mexico Posted October 25, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 25, 2007 The prettiest places are 7 Mile Beach, everything on or under the water, followed by the Kaibo area. The East end of the island is tropical, the west end is scrubby. The traffic in Georgetown is crazy when the ships are in, and it gets pretty bad up the West side through 7 Mile Beach too. To the East it's pretty tame, quite rural by the time you get past the last roundabout. The road goes up to the Northwest corner of the island, around the south end, up the east side, and about 1/2 the way aroudn the north side before dead ending. It takes about an hour to get from Georgetown to Rum Point - longer if there's a lot of traffic. Rum Point is virtually at the end of the road. Hope this helps, have a great time!
