this might be a very silly question but is ALL of the food on a cruise FREE?I thought it was,but as i'm reading some threads people are saying u need to pay @ certain places?Confused.

Depending on your ship.. there maybe a supper club that costs $30pp (well worth it) and most do have the specialty coffee bar with cakes and such.

The supper clubs cost $20 per person and there are certain pastry shops that charge per item, but everything else is free! Don't worry, you won't have to pay for food unless you want to. You will not even come close to trying all the free food.

If there's a speciality Restaurant on the ship, then there's an extra fee. Some ships also have things like a coffee bar where you pay for the cookies or cakes, or the sushi in the wine bar. But as far as breakfasts, lunches and dinners and pizza or burgers or buffet, it's a free for all.

As mentioned, all the food is free with the exception of the supper clubs, specialty coffee and pastry shops.

 

Eat to your heart's content. Feel free to order more than one appetizer, soup, entrée or desert! Oh... and don't forget the pizza and burgers!!!

 

I saw one woman with three lobster tails! ... well... she had three lobster tails on her plate... She would have looked odd with even ONE lobster tail!!!

It's not a silly question at all. It used to be more cut and dried, but here is the story in broad strokes: breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the main dining room or the buffet, along with tea, midnight buffet, poolside grill items, room service and on some lines, appetizers passed or served in lounges or brought to your room is available in unlimited quantities as part of your cruise fare.

 

Many lines have a "premium" dining experience which requires a reservation and a per person fee (and tip). There are more premium lines that do not charge for this restaurant dining experience.

 

Some lines charge extra for ice cream while others (like HAL) make it available for free. Lines that have cafes usually charge for coffee etc. but have pastries or sandwiches available for free if you purchase a beverage.

 

Usually anything you are offered (lemonade, ice water, on lines like Celebrity and Azamara champagne upon first boarding) is without charge, but some lines have what I consider to be the very annoying practice of offering a tray of wine poured in glasses for which you will be asked to sign a charge slip. If you look at your daily program you will see these "tastings" (usually accompanying a cheese display -- free cheese but you are expected to buy a glass of wine) and you will know that the wine being offered is not a free tasting.

 

Are you already booked or just thinking about a cruise? If you specify a line I'd be able to give you more specific information. I'm sure you know that soda, alcohol (not counting captain's toast, welcome aboard drink on some lines, free tastings hoping you'll buy from duty free etc.) and specialty coffees (expresso, cappuccino) not served in the dining room are an extra cost. On shore excursions it should specify whether or not a meal, snack or beverages is included in the price.

 

If you aren't sure if there is an additional charge for something, just ask!

As you are on the Carnival board, I assume you are taliing about Carnival Cruise line. There are some specialty things you CAN pay for but it not a must that you do so. You will not go hungy with your choices of what is included in your fare. If you like expresso or cappicino you may elect to wait and get it complementary in the dining room with meals instead of at the specialty shop where you pay extra. If you are satisifed with all the dining choices you have you are not expected to do the supper club that is extra. The choice is yours alone. Have a great cruise.

Here's something I posted awhile back that might help. Another thing, I've never seen a charge for sushi.

Beverages included in the cost of your cruise:

 

Lido buffet area - Iced tea, hot water & tea bags, coffee, decaf, hot chocolate, juice varieties, water, lemonade, fruitpunch. On buffet, milk, skim milk, chocolate milk.

 

Dining room - Iced tea, hot tea, coffee, water, decaf, milk, chocolate milk, juices, espresso and cappuccino.

 

Room service - MOST of the beverages that are available on Lido, but not lemonade or fruitpunch.

 

Food included in the cost of your cruise:

 

All meals in the dining room, Lido buffet, as well as the pizzeria, deli, salad bars, ice cream and frozen yogurt machines, room service.

 

Pizzeria and room service available 24 hrs. a day.

 

Sometimes they have a MakeYourOwn Sundae bar on Lido Deck.

 

'Tea Time' on sea day afternoons has hot tea, coffee, tea sandwiches, scones, petite fours, etc.

 

The Captain's Cocktail party has hors d'oeuvres, as well as cocktails.

 

No extra charge for any of the above.:)

I would normally agree with a statement like this but from all the reviews of the supper club around here, I've just got to try it. What's another 60 bucks? I'd never find a 5 star place here in NY for that little money and everyone here has said the supper clubs are of that caliber. I'm definitely going to give it a try once I sail on a ship with a supper club.

Sur Mer was one of my favorite spots...

 

Here's the menu:

 

 

The calamari fritters were amazing as was the bouillabaisse.

 

The Fish and Chips are a staple... don't forget the malt vinegar!!!

My husand and I paid to have dinner in Miracle's, "Nick and Nora's" It was well worth the $30 per person. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was very romantic and the service was top notch. We were celebrating our anniversary so we didn't mind spending the extra money even though there was so much great food at no charge. They had a band that played soft dinner/slow dance music and the restaurant was not over-crowded. We will certainly set aside one night on our next cruise to enjoy a romantic dinner like this again.

Hmmm could of swore i heard sushi was not free...my mistake...sorry..Of course that does make me happy cause i love sushi ..Im going on Spirit next year and asked my DS said she had it, it was great but not cheap...what ever that ment...maybe she ate it in the casino lol

Well, the point is that while the "free" food on the ship is usually great, the Supper Club's food is spectacular. This goes for the coffee shop specialties such as vanilla latte and that fabulous strawberry cheesecake that is "to die for". The prices are much cheaper than you would pay on land, and the "costs extra" food is the best I have ever eaten....anywhere. It is WELL worth the minimal charge you pay. But we still enjoy dining in the dining room for the vast majority of our meals....which are "free" and very good.
