Takyla Posted October 31, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2007 What is the proper protocol for non-muslims if the call to prayer is called while we might be in a mosque or any other public place? How long does it generally last and how often during the day? Obviously respect must be shown, however is ther anything else.
arabrab Posted October 31, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 31, 2007 In Istanbul we heard the call to prayer while we were in the Grand Bazaar area, and not much changed. (The call comes from all over the old city -- lots of tiny turrets, each with its own muzzein and a portable microphone, each at a slightly different time. Rather awe-inspiring.) I saw some men going into a nearby mosque (many of which are tiny) but business seemed uninterrupted in the shops of the Bazaar. I suspect that following the lead of the tour guides while you're visiting the mosque would be the best suggestion -- even if you're not with the tour. Don't forget to dress conservatively. RetiredFL Posted October 31, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 31, 2007 There is usually a fenced off area in the more tourist oriented mosques, such as the Blue Mosque, for worshipers and a seperate area for visitors. There will always be a few people praying at any time of day. Obviously worship times are not the time to take multiple flash pictures or turn on your portable stereo, LOL, but in general we found that signs were explanatory and you will be told of any rules before you enter. A little common sense and asking if not sure will get you through. They appreciate visitors seeing their history.
