What does "DH" stand for?

This is the only board I visit with these darling abbreviations; I frequent car/music/graphics/photography forums and people definitely don't do it there. :)

These abbreviations are very common on parenting boards, that's probably where you'd see them most often. On Parents.com for instance all you'll see is DD, DS, DH, DW, etc....

I agree with the detractors and and just hate to read a post that is full of DW this, DH that, SIL and FIL went to blah blah blah. The reason you use shorthand when texting on a cell phone is because the damn keyboard is small. The reason you did it on a BBS is because your modem was maybe a 1200bps or if lucky, a 2400bps and it took forever to do anything. The only reason you would do it here is because you are lazy. Either too lazy to type or too lazy to learn to type. If you cannot make an intellegent sentence without having to use shorthand, it's exactly that - not an intellegent sentence. I would much rather see spelling mistakes than DH, DW, SIL, DIL crap.

I think the reason you do it on message boards is so you can get your thoughts across and post your message faster. Also, I may not always feel comfortable giving out my husbands and especially my children's names and it's easier to type DD, then daughter every time. OMG (oh my god) - I don't think it's lazy at all - it's called the norm - - it is the 21st century for pete's sake, kwim? (know what I mean):) LOL (laughing out loud)...........see how much easier the abbreviations are?

I use the abbreviations because they're the accepted protocol. You don't have to like it, but you do have to live with it. I know how to type and I know how to form a proper sentence, TYVM.;)

That's weird how how I was quoted for writing that second paragraph. :)

The problem I see with the "DH" etc. abbreviations is that they are for the benefit of the poster and other frequent posters, not for the benefit of new posters who come to this site looking for information (the point of the forum, no?). FM Cowboy just registered here in October... so there ya go. The abbreviations make the board a little less accessible to those folks who come here looking for cruising tips and insight. (sagiv666's remark is a prime example...he thought the abbreviations represented cabin levels.)

Big deal? No. You spend enough time surfing around and then you figure it out. You spend enough time actually posting and it becomes a handy little tool for you... and your fellow frequent posters. I don't think it's lazy...cheesy, definitely...but just consider what someone who doesn't know the abbreviations can glean from a post filled with DH, DW, DD, DS, MIL, etc... not a lot. Just something to consider. Don't go overboard (pun intended).

Fine, you learn something every day. I accept the forum's guidelines and any abbreviations others may use (except RCI for Royal Caribbean International, since RCI also stands for my timeshare company who uses RCCL to denote Royal Caribbean and avoid confusion). I am a relative newcomer to the forum.:)

Those sites that you mention - I doubt that there is nearly the discussion and/or reference to family members as there is on a cruise board where people mostly cruise with family and friends.:)

If those boards had people typing wife, husband, daughter, son, mother-in-law as often as they are used on this board my guess is that you would soon find the DW, DH, DD, DS, and MIL suddenly very popular there too. :D
