kcparrothead Posted November 29, 2007 #2 Share Posted November 29, 2007 I would suggest taking an excursion to one of the cayes. That's what we plan to do.
OttoCal Posted November 29, 2007 #3 Share Posted November 29, 2007 Beaches are VERY different from what you may expect or know from other locations. Tiny, not much sand in many places. Try Caye Caulker or San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye. The only place we saw armed police men was when we got stuck in the mud in the middle of the country, miles from a paved road in Five Blues Lake Park. Obviously locals had called and the police came and found us. We were really only a little stuck. ;) But they gave us a tour of the closed park and taught us some stuff about the jungle and we had a great story to tell :D plus some hysterical photos. Sounds like one of the ship's tours might be the best option for you though. Best option for the non-adventurous. Oh, everyone in Belize owns a machette and knows how to use it. You can't live in an area that is mainly jungle and not know your way around a machette. Wish I could wack a coconut open like those guys can! Amazing skills, the culture is just so very different there than anything at all in the US.

DonMar Posted November 30, 2007 #5 Share Posted November 30, 2007 We did not experience any police with Ak-47s or other. We loved Belize. There is so much to do. We went to Lamanai (Mayan ruins) and had an outstanding experience. We went on an independent tour and we (two of us) were the ONLY people at Lamanai! It was a wonderful place. Many people go the cayes and cave tubing. There are also other Mayan ruins that are not as far or difficult to get to as Lamanai. Outside the port area there are some vendors with some interesting handicrafts. We always felt very safe and the people were so friendly. Enjoy!
