skogler Posted December 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 5, 2007 Has anyone driven up to the top on the volcano to watch the sunrise? We are renting a car and trying to decide between a tour and just driving ourselves. How long does it take to get from the port to the viewing area? Where do you go when you get to the top of Haleakala to watch to sunrise? Thanks for any help.....
Ka Honu Posted December 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 5, 2007 It's 1.5 - 2 hours from Kahului to Haleakala. Most people watch the sunrise from the Visitor Center or the summit. Wear warm clothes.
rho88 Posted December 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted December 7, 2007 I would suggest taking a tour. I went with Roberts for $39/person. You could drive up yourself, but keep in mind that whoever is driving will be driving for 1:30hrs, in the dark at 4am on narrow mountain roads. skogler Posted December 7, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted December 7, 2007 You may be right. I may think more about the tour and not drive it. Scott
dottiespots Posted December 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted December 7, 2007 We drove ourselves from Lahina several years ago. No problems at all. But, the tour is also a good idea. Just weight your options and decide what you want to do. If you drive your self you can leave whenever you please and with a tour you must follow their time schedule. If you drive you can stop for breakfast on the way down and then hit some other places, on a tour you go where they take you. Just a thought.:)
hawaiilvr Posted December 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 7, 2007 If you drive, you'll have a car that you can then tour the upcountry area of Maui on your own. It is gorgeous.
