swimming safe?

We are renting a car and driving the island. I was wondering if it is safe to swim on all of the beaches? Or is it like Cozumel where only one side of the island is safe to swim?

It depends upon the wind direction, as well as size of waves. The downwind shore(s) will be clamer. For example, in a northeast wind the south and west shores will have calmer seas.

 

Inside the reef on the eastern tip of the island there is usually a significant side-shore current which turns out to sea through the boat channel on the northeast corner of the island.
