DAL745 Posted December 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Cruising in/out of Rome for the first time next summer on the Navigator. Does anyone have experience with embarkation/disembarkation in Rome?? Trying to plan "how" to get to/from the port (train, shuttle, etc)? How much time to allow? What time to book my return flight home (10am too early?)? How quick is customs/immigration on the disembarkation side? Pre-cruise hotel in Rome / location /price/etc? Dick in Falls Church Posted December 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Did one of those last year. We went into Rome a couple of days early. Trained in from the airport---which was fine because we pack light (one rolling case per, plus a carryon). We hooked up with others on the cruise, and went to port on a small bus. On return, again we hooked up with the Cruise Critic bunch, and had a bus from port to the airport. For what it may be worth, the lines through security there were as bad or worse than any we've found in the US. Some recent users could probably give you a better idea of what it might be now. Oh yes, when we got to the airport in plenty of time for our flight, found it had been cancelled. However, they could rebook us through Frankfurt on an earlier flight--now loading. We bucked the lines, sprinted through the airport (well, Betsy can't really sprint), got there to find the plane in (late, because of slowdown at previous Italian airport), but sitting waiting to load. After another half hour, we loaded, and were told that fog had closed Frankfurt, so we'd wait another 1/2 hour. Got to Frankfurt, at one end of the airport, as our flight to Dulles was finishing loading. Waited almost 3 hours in line to rebook--were given option of going back through Chicago or staying overnight. Good thing we didn't go to Chicago--airport was closed for a couple of days. Every day an adventure!
scorpiomum Posted December 9, 2007 #3 Share Posted December 9, 2007 hi we just did the 9 day brilliance cruise in the med so we only embarked in rome. i can tell you that we used romecabs as there were 4 of us and arranged transfers to the port. we have 2 kids and after 3 days sightseeing were happy to be taken directly to the port without hassle so it was money well spent. it was 140 euros. we arrived at the port about 12.15 and there was no real waiting so we were onboard by 12.30pm. we were allowed in our cabins by 1pm and i think we had luggage by about 2pm. we stayed at Hotel del corso in rome which is right on the main shopping street and a block from the spanish steps. i would recommend this area (but maybe a better hotel). Rome was really very easy to get around, most of the sights are within walking distance (as long as you like walking). if you have a look at the europe ports section you should find lots of useful information and hotel recommendations.
