Best route driving across Maui, from Kahului?

I am studying MAPS now! Two weeks to go - woohoo!

 

Okay, enough premature celebrating: I see two roads/highways out of Kahului. Day one, we will visit Iao Valley S.P. and then head to the South Maui beaches. What is the best route? If I were guessing, I would guess hwy. 30 from Iao Valley S.P. south to intersection with 31, then take it south to the beaches. Is that the best route? I know it is only about 10 miles along 30, but people talk about the horrific traffic, so I thought I'd ask. If it avoids a lot of traffic to head back Kaahumanu Ave. to 311 and take THAT south to the beaches, I will.

 

This is just me looking at a Fodor's map. Locals and experienced travelers know what a map can never tell you. ;-)

Google maps were our friends. We printed out copies of every route we planned and we also printed out some general area maps just in case. As for the route from Iao to South Maui, I would think 30 to 310 to 31 would be the best route to take.
