Somana

We went on NCL Pearl and when we got there everyone had to be tendered, we went on an excursion and was told we had to return early because the CAPT decided to leave early.:mad: We never saw the island. Our friends went to the island and said their was notheing there. Why would a large company decide to visit here? Does anyone have any different story on SOMANA? :confused: We did the kayak and cave tour.:cool:

I did a google search for Samana and here's some of the hits. It looks interesting. Santo Thomas de Castilla was harder to find info on but we LOVED that port. SOmetimes a new port is great because the people are so grateful for the tourism. We just got off the Azamara Quest which made a stop here. The ship anchored in Samana bay.

 

We went on a whale watching excursion that took us right from the ship out to where the whales were. It was a highlight of our trip, we were able to get pretty close and got some nice pictures. The whales winter there from mid-January to mid-March.

 

On our return they gave us the option of going to Cayo Levantado which we did. It is also known as Baccardi Island as Baccardi once used it as a location to shoot commercials. It is very nice, but two thirds of the island is occupied by a hotel that doesn't want the riff raff (like us apparently!) to enter. The options there are sunbathing, swimming and shopping for T-shirts, inexpensive jewelry, paintings, coffee and cigars.

 

There was no option to go to the mainland except as part of a ship excursion. We heard safety was the concern.
