Snorkeling in Caymans

We will be in the Caymans in Feb. and wish to snorkel. We've done Stingray City and found it just ok. Any advice about where to go either in a cab or with a tour would be appreciated. We have our own equipment and are experienced. Thanks

I have been researching this very subject and started a list by copy and pasting information I came across online.

 

Here's the first section:

 

Snorkeling Information

 

Recommended snorkeling:

 

Stingray City

In front of the West Bay Cemetary (across from the fire station on the West Bay entrance)

Eden Rock

Near the Seaview Hotel

Smith's Cove (picnic tables and shade available)

Shipwreck located offshore 300 yards past Treasure Island

"Calai" shipwreck located 100 yards offshore from Calico Jack's

"Palace" shipwreck located in the South Sound across from the Crow's Nest

 

 

 

And here's the second:

 

Grand Cayman sites

Popular west coast sites which are easy to reach from shore on Grand Cayman include these locations just south of George Town:

 

Coconut Harbour, Sunset House, Seaview Hotel, Parrot's Landing Watersports Park; Eden Rock Dive Center and the shallows reefs directly off Paradise Reef bar.

 

On Grand Cayman's west coast just north of George Town: Don Foster's dive shop on North Church St. and Calico Jack's - both are the best entry points to see the wreck of the Cali. Other good locations include just off Bob Soto's Scuba Center at the Lobster Pot restaurant. Treasure Island Resort has good Snorkelling off its beach. Other popular locations further north include Cemetery Reef in West Bay and Turtle Reef, just north of the Turtle Farm at Northwest Point.

 

The shallows off Morritt's Tortuga Club and Resort's lovely beach offer a surprising variety of fish and other marine life.

Do you know anything about 'Red Sails' tour company that goe to Sting Ray City?

 

Red Sail Sports is a large operation on a number of islands. Not sure they will save you any money but they are legit.

 

They are the operator for RCL, Disney, and Costa on Grand Cayman.

 

They also have a number of beach rental operations (wave runners, etc.) on Grand Cayman.

check out http://caymanislandsdiscounts.com/OffshoreSnorkeling.htm - it gives you information where to snorkel. If you go back through this board, someone posted alot of really good information on snorkeling. We loved Eden Rock (walk to the right when you get off the tender). Keep walking until you get to Eden Rock. They rent lockers and snorkel gear. And we loved snorkeling the wreck of the Cali. From Eden Rock, walk back towards the tender, walk past Hammerheads (we ate lunch there), there is a little dive shop on the left - they have a ladder at the end of their dock. Swim out to the bouys and you will find the wreck of the Cali.

We didn't like snorkeling the Wreck of the Gamma. You have to climb in over sharp coral and I ended up with part of a sea urchin in my hand. There were hardly any fish around the wreck.

 

We also didn't like Cheeseburger Reef. Lots of garbage in the water. We didn't swim out too far (this was our 4th snorkel site in one day and we were getting tired), so maybe it was better further out.

 

When we go back in May we will stick with Eden Rock and The Wreck of the Cali. They were awesome. Watch out for the Tarpons - they are huge, but harmless. We took dry cat food and fed the little fishes - it was a blast.

We went to Cemetry Beach in December and it was great! We took the public bus which was 2-3 USD per person each way. Last time we were in Grand Cayman we snorkeled at Eden rock and we saw many more fish this time at Cemetary Beach.
