Marva Shaw!! Quick Question!

We had thought about just getting off the ship and finding a taxi, but after all of the bad things we have read about Jamaica, we weren't sure how safe that would be. Honestly, we weren't even sure we wanted to get off the ship as neither of us are a fan of being harrassed.

I understand your reservations - that's exactly why we booked a tour guide. :) However, if you just want to go to the falls, then getting a taxi (with JUTA plates) would be a good alternative to hiring a guide. After getting off the ship, you would hire a taxi (this is quite easy - they are allllll over!), go to the falls, then get a taxi back to the port (again, taxis are waiting for you at the falls). Will you be harrassed? Probably not... although, you will probably get a few "would you like to buy this..." requests. A simple "no thank you" usually works.

On our trip, we were on our own after going shopping in the shopping center across from the port - we had to walk a few blocks to get back and had NO problems. We did see a few beggars, but no one harrassed us and we felt comfortable. There are a lot of people around - locals and tourists - so you will not feel like you're in a desserted alley. Use your judgement to decide what's best for you. I would hate for you to miss out on such a tourist trap. ;) (The falls are beautiful though!)

My family and I just took a tour with Marva Shaw last month. She was wonderful! We felt very comfortable with her from the start, because we had read such raving reviews about her tours on Cruise Critic. We went to Dunn's River Falls and we also went tubing down the White River. We kept all of our personal items in Marva's van. She assured us that the van would be securely locked while we were at the falls. She was waiting for us when we finished our hike up Dunn's River Falls, and all of our items were safe and sound just as she promised. She then escorted us to the White River to go tubing. Once again, she was waiting at the bottom, as promised. She was a delightful woman, and she taught us a lot about the Jamaican culture. We felt very safe traveling with her. I would highly recommend her tour!
