Cash Question

First time cruiser leaving on Saturday (NOS Western Carrib) with 5 other first time cruisers (3 couples total). I was wandering how much in cash/travelers checks we need to take with us? We will not be doing much shopping for jewerly, etc and will pay for excursions on the boat with a Credit Card. Any suggestions?

For the most part, you will need cash for tipping, gambling and anything you might want to buy onshore including taxis and any privately booked shore excursions. Other than that, everything can go on your Credit Card. It has been awhile since we sailed on RCI and they might allow you to put your gratuities (tips) on your CC if you would want them to.

I take 500 a person for a short cruise 1000 for a long one.. I am now partial to the new American Express Travel Card. I only take an emergancy credit card and pay for most everything with cash, including my shipboard account. I had an issue once with a bad charge that soured me but would probably not happen to anyone else.

I would take cash in small bills for tipping and misc expenses to get you to the ship and a little reserve for unexpected cash outlays for the first couple of days. Traveler's checks can be cashed on board at the Purser's desk (don't try it on the first day however due to lines) to replenish your cash supply. Cash can aslo be obtained from the casino and charged to your shipboard account. :)

Hey just so you know you can't use it for your cruise charge card. I work for a bank and was bored one day so I read the rules. I think the rule was right before brothels. I am not joking it was really funny :)
