Why do you people do this?

America has become a giant Wal-mart store, lets just get by. Why dress up and look nice when I can wear a moo moo and a pair of crooks. Come on America look at yourselves and just try to look good for one evening.

You don't have to wear a gown or cocktail dress to look nice:rolleyes:

And how in the heck does a person wear a pair of crooks anyway:confused: :p

If I've missed this, someone tell me. Does Carnival specifically refer to the evening as "formal night" in the capers? I don't believe they do. It simply says "Dinner: Formal Attire requested" or whatever, am I right? I believe that cruisers have adopted the saying "Formal Night." Perhaps it is because in the past, the cruise line did refer to it as Formal Night and now have gone to just attire requests? I haven't cruised in well over a year, and I don't keep my capers, so I can't check to see if I'm right.

So while you can be put off my people not staying dressed up, it's not required or suggested for anything but dinner, so it's a personal preference :)

This is quoted DIRECTLY from the Thursday, January 10th 2008 Carnival Capers which happens to be right in front of me:

"Formal" is the recommended attire for this evening's meal. Please, no shorts to be worn.

A recommendation is a far cry from a requirement. A request for no shorts to be worn I can live with. I personally dressed well for the suppers in the dining room. I scooted right on up to our stateroom and changed after the meal each night, as did my DH, into something more comfortable afterwards.

I brought a very formal gown with me to wear the first "formal" dress night, but decided last minute not to wear it. I was with a group of 16 others who did not bring anything remotely like it, and declined to wear it so as not to make any of them feel uncomfortable. When entering the dining room, I did not see one woman wearing anything as elaborate as the gown I brought, and was happy I did not wear it as I would have stuck out like a modern day Cinderella... :p

Just too bad you're a follower, instead of a leader.

BTW, if someone recommended I bring an umbrella, because rain was imminent, I would still think it meant strongly suggested, just like when I was a kid.

I guess the English language is taking a hit as well.

I change as soon as dinner is over. Hate to walk around in heels all night. I want to be as comfortable as possible. I mean really, I paid for my cruise and should dress the way I want. :p First people complain about not dressing for formal night and now they complain because we don't stayed dressed long enough..

Why, after so many people say they LOVE dressing up for formal nights, does everyone change back into their regular clothes as SOON as they are done with dinner, like it's a race or something? I personally like to enjoy the rest of my evening in my pretty clothes, and I don't feel like changing that many times a day. Hubby thinks otherwise, but I force him. Needless to say, I feel out of place because everyone else is so casual and we're walking around formal. Would it really kill you to wear a dress or suit for a few more hours? Modern society is just not classy anymore like it was back in the day!! People then would dress formally all the time, especially on a cruise, and now it seems to kill people after about 2 hours tops! Opinions?

Thanks so much for saying this. :D It really bugs me as well. I always stay in my formal clothes as it is Formal Night (not Formal Early Evening or Formal Dinner) and expect others to do the same. One my cruise in 3.5 weeks, my boyfriend had better stay in his formal clothes (he's renting a tux from Carnival). :D I think he will cause he knows how much I love the Formal Nights!! :D There are 7 nights of the cruise (at least the one I'm going on) and it won't kill you to stay dressed to the nines for 2 of them. If you want to walk around and eat in your PJs for the other 5 nights, that's fine with me!! You can enjoy your cruise any way you want to but please respect the dress code on those 1 or 2 nights.

Why do you call it "Formal Night"? Nowhere in the Capers does it refer to it as "Formal Night". It DOES say, and I quote: "FORMAL is the RECOMMENDED attire for this EVENING'S MEAL."

Not, "Formal is the required attire for the entire NIGHT."

And why we should all wear the formal attire you would like us to for the duration of the night just to please you and others who share your thoughts on the subject? I may have been accused of being a "follower" by another misguided soul a few posts up, but I assure you (and him as well), I am by no means a sheep. I decide for myself what I will do, and this includes my choice of attire on any given day at any given function.

Thank you. I will get off my soap box now. ;)

The dress code is only for the dining room, not the entire ship.

It would kill me to stay dressed up....I only dress up so I can get the Lobster or other wonderful meal in the DR. I dress up because I follow the dress code. Formal attire is not required outside of the DR. I want to be comfortable. Why should I be uncomfortable just to prevent you from feeling overdressed. Sounds like your problem, not mine.

I've read enough on these threads that say MOST people enjoy dressing up. But then why do they call it "formal NIGHT" why not just formal "HOUR?" And since it is formal NIGHT, if you hate it so much, why take a cruise? Or why not just eat elsewhere that night? If there was something I hated or felt forced to do, I wouldn't do it! (Unless it was mandatory like a job duty). If I hated so badly putting on formal clothes for 1-2 nights (Oh the HORROR!) I just wouldn't cruise because I know that's part of a cruise!

Instead, why don't you Cruise with Cunard or HAL and leave us alone...We are not put on this cruise to help you feel better about yourself....If you want to dress formal all the time..do it. Leave us alone.

After rereading the original thread, especially the title WHY DO YOU PEOPLE..., I stand by my reply:

You revolve around the cruise. The cruise does NOT revolve around you.

Take this to heart. It is a great life lesson, and makes for one happy marriage!:D

Regardless of your expectations for others, the dress code is for the meal. When everyone is talking about dressing formal in the DR the constant comeback is "If you don't want to dress formal, eat on the Lido deck!" Now you are saying that no matter where we go on the ship you EXPECT us to be dressed formally. So those people who choose to eat on the Lido deck must now get dressed up to appease your delicate sensabilities? I don't think that is reasonable! You need to lower your expecations because nothing you can say is going to change the fact that it is for the MEAL and some of us will be changing afterwards. This is not the senior prom. This is a formal DINNER. What you and your boyfriend chose to do is your problem and I couldn't care less if you chose to "Dress to the 9s", just leave the rest of us alone! We are complying with our hosts request. By the way, you are not the host so you have no right to request any specific attire. There's just no way to make some people happy, is there?

As long as I don't tell people that they're under-dressed, and people don't tell me I'm over-dressed in my tux, there is no problem. Sometimes we also will dress up on non-formal dinner occasions.

If I should ever go insane and start to feel like I have enough self-importance that I have the right to tell fellow customers what clothes to wear at formal dinners, I should expect that they would also have the right to force me to wear more casual attire on less formal occasions.

OK, so you're staying at the Bellagio. You have dinner at Paris. Then you go to the casino. What do you wear to the casino?

Which casino am I gambling in? If I were to play at Paris, I don't think I would return to my hotel, change, and then go back, so I would probably play in whatever I wore to dinner. If I was returning to Bellagio to play, though, I may very well choose to pop up to the room and change. I'm not sure why there is anything wrong with that...

You are obviously on the wrong cruise line. There are others that may better suit you.

TBJL24 --- You've hit the nail on the head! If formal is the way someone would like to go ... then there are formal cruises out there that won't make you feel so out of place when you want to stay all dressed up. :)

Normally these types of posts are good for a little  but after reading a few pages I see this issue really upsets/annoys the OP. What confuses me is when a poster claims this in a previous post

"Well I have sure seen my share of tattoos on cruises, so I don't think you will be out of place.

And you're right, what is it with the older people always having to make snarky comments along the lines of, "that's going to look horrible and saggy when you're older?"

Personally, I think I will have a lot more important things to worry or care about when I get older! I've always felt you should live for today and do what you want, because tomorrow is not promised.

-Misssnoopygirl, proud of her 2 tattoos!"

See where this gets confusing? Live for today.. lots of other important things to worry about but yet want everyone else around to be accountable for their own "live for today" moments? After my last cruise where I saw some very laid back attitudes towards the dining room including bare feet I decided I really don't care anymore. I'm going to go have a good time and not waste a minute of it looking at what other people are doing or wearing. :)

Its always been my understanding that the suggested attire is for dinner. If you choose not to dress accordingly you may eat on the lido deck. Fine.

So according to some of you others who do not dress in a tux or suit should just stay in their stateroom from 5pm until sunrise the next day?

If I am walking down Broadway in NYC after dinner on the way to a show wearing formal attire should I demand everyone on the street dress the same way so as not to ruin my entire evening?

Get a grip folks. You will eat dinner in your proper attire. When you take your formal pictures there will not be anyone else in those pictures other than you. So you have two choices use those pictures as fond memories or you can ruin it for YOURSELF by complaining for years to come that you saw someone dressed in a pair of jeans after dinner!

I disagree. :( On my cruise 2 weeks ago on Carnival Freedom, on those nights it said right in the Carnival Capers "Tonight is Formal Night". :D
