jkl55us Posted January 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2008 Hi, We will take Gem from 5/18 to 5/25; I just found out Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel will be closed on 5/22 due Corpus Christi Day. Is Colosseum, and St. Peter's Basilica still open on that day??
photographia Posted January 24, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 24, 2008 The Colosseum will be open. That's a Catholic holy-day, not an Italian national holiday. Some years back I was in Rome on Corpus Christi, and I don't remember St. Peter's being closed; but there might be more Masses and/or a procession that day, which may or may not throw a monkey-wrench into your plans to tour the Basilica. I do remember that the Pope held a Holy Hour late in the afternoon (maybe 5 PM?) on Corpus Christi, outside in St. Peter's Square. If that happens again this year, be aware that the Basilica is always closed whenever he's out there standing on the podium right in front of it. Cruise Cat Posted January 26, 2008 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2008 As I understand it, the Vatican Museum is also closed on Sundays - of course..... We are hoping there is still plenty open the Sunday we are there!
X-ring Posted January 26, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 26, 2008 As I understand it, the Vatican Museum is also closed on Sundays - of course..... Except for the last Sunday of the month when it is open - and free! :)
