F5Loar Posted February 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Okay I can't search this because I don't know what it was called but on the Pearl in the Mexican Mamboo's Resturant they had this special meal that was served on a big hook. It had steak, shrimp and chicken if I remember. What was the proper name for this item on the menu? or better yet can anyone quote it direct from the menu? NCL does not post their menus. cruise4kicks Posted February 1, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Il Popo
Beachbum1944 Posted February 1, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 1, 2008 It is called "Il Popo". It doesn't contain shrimp. It contains steak, chicken, vegetables, and pinapple. Very good and it is meant for 2 people. Also, when you are there, make sure you have the quesadillas (SP?). The best I ever had.
Mooder Posted February 1, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 1, 2008 A review of the Gem mentioned that if you want, you can request that they substitute shrimp for the steak. I have never done this, but recall reading it since I am hoping to have this when I am on the Gem this month!!!!
F5Loar Posted February 1, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted February 1, 2008 That's it. I had it on the Pearl and I've never seen this offered in any land Tex-Mex or Mexican resturant. I'm going to use a big bannana hook holder with a metal kabob skewer and try to duplicate it at home. Thanks for the quick reply. That's what makes CC so special is the people here that know what they are talking about. By the way for any first timers to the Pearl (what a great ship) this meal is a must try. In fact anything they had in Mamboos was super. Nothing wrong with dining south of the border while on a cruise ship.

Cruise_More_Often Posted February 1, 2008 #7 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Great photo, Paul and Maryann. I think this may be my favorite NCL meal! We had it on the Star last February, served on the holder-thingie. Then when we went on the Star overnight last September, we ordered it again. This time, the waiter just brought the items already served on our plate. The people sitting below us got theirs served properly. Guess who didn't get a tip that night? (Just kidding, folks, we tip generously, even if Il Popo isn't served properly).

Mooder Posted February 1, 2008 #10 Share Posted February 1, 2008 I have not been on her yet, but I am pretty sure on the Gem the Mexican/Tapas restaurant is called Tequilas.
cruise4kicks Posted February 1, 2008 #11 Share Posted February 1, 2008 I have not been on her yet, but I am pretty sure on the Gem the Mexican/Tapas restaurant is called Tequilas. OOPS! You're right. I'm thinking of the Dawn. Sorry! ;)
Mooder Posted February 1, 2008 #12 Share Posted February 1, 2008 OOPS! You're right. I'm thinking of the Dawn. Sorry! ;) I know in my head it will always be Salsas since Dawn was my first - so I totally understand that oops. :D
lola4795 Posted February 1, 2008 #13 Share Posted February 1, 2008 How do you eat it? Are you supposed to pull the skewers off and eat them? What is it they are attached to?
ddakrt Posted February 1, 2008 #14 Share Posted February 1, 2008 Here's our waiter on the Jewel in action serving us the Il Popo. It certainly looked cool, but the steak was pretty chewy. I would have asked for the shrimp if I had known about it. BTW, try the Jalepeno served with the Il Popo, it's terrificly spicy! :D
AFT_LOVER Posted February 2, 2008 #15 Share Posted February 2, 2008 We had something similar at our timeshare's restaurant on Maui. Very juicy, even husband who hates veggies ate these, Love the photo of "the King" with his reward. 2 months til we get to enjoy all this great food on Dawn sailing to Bermuda. F5Loar Posted February 4, 2008 Author #16 Share Posted February 4, 2008 We got to pick our stuff off ourselves. Were we supose to wait for the waiter to pick if off for us? I'd hate to eat this masterpiece the wrong way!
