DonahCBrown Posted February 11, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 11, 2008 How much walking is involved in the excursion. We have a couple of 80 year olds and wondering what to expect. Don't know about how the ship's tours do it, but... My 86 year old mom has done the VNP tour with her friends. Walking is, to some extent, discretionary - you can go a little way on the trails, etc., but if mobility is an issue, I wouldn't suggest doing the full tour of Thurston Lava Tube, for instance, or the walk out on the lava flow if the current flow ever gets around to moving back to a more accessible area. There's quite a lot to see at the park that doesn't involve much walking at all, though. The Volcano House, the Visitor's Center and the Jaegar Museum are all interesting to see, provide good views over the Halemaumau Crater, and don't require much in the way of walking, there are overlooks on Chain of Craters road that are very accessible, or that can be viewed from inside the car. Nani Mau Gardens are extensive, and there's a lot of walking, but it is on paved walkways and there are benches.
