Fried food/peanut oil?

We have a guest who is allergic to peanuts and peanut oil. Anyone ever had a problem with the fried foods? Does anyone know if they use peanut oil or vegetable oil on the ships? We'll talk to the managers on the ship but I was wondring if anyone out there is allergic to peanuts and had a problem with things like french fries, fried shimp, etc... Never had to consider this before. Never even thought about it.

A: We make every effort to accommodate our guests' dietary requirements whenever possible. We can accommodate special needs such as:

Food allergies

Gluten-free

Vegetarian (except for vegan/macrobiotic)

Lactose-free/soy milk, Ensure, and kosher meals are no extra charge. All you have to do is notify us at least 45 days prior to sailing. Just send an e-mail that includes the guests' names, reservation ID number, ship's name and voyage date to the relevant address below:

Special meal requests that are faxed or e-mailed less than 45 days of sailing are dependent on the ship's product availability. We will try to accommodate to the best of our ability.

I'm not sure what they use on the ship, but probably not peanut oil. Generally peanut oil is not considered to be an allergy problem, but it's best avoided by people who have severe peanut allergies as a precaution.

I have already researched it and e-mailed the cruise line at that same e-mail address. I was wondering if anyone has had any personal experiences. Those would help me. Thank you.

I am allergic to peanuts and almonds, We have sailed twice with RCI and I have been well looked after.(other than I cannot eat those delicious looking cookies). Everyone in the windjammer and the restaurant have been great and told me what I can and cannot eat, and have offered to make alternatives on several occasions. Our waiter last year was fantastic and really went out of his way to make sure I had everything I wanted.

I have an allergy to tree nuts and cruise lines (including RCI) have been very accommodating. I just made sure that I told them when I booked my cruise and told my waiter in the dining room. I also would ask the buffet attendants before I ate at the buffet but because the food there is pretty much the same everyday I only asked a couple of times. I would just ask questions every time I would eat anything new. I would also make sure you bring your proper meds just in case!!

Do make sure that the cruiseline knows in advance (call the Access Desk [special needs desk]) and double check on it a few weeks before the cruise. Not that this makes it certain they will get the info. right to the ship, but hopefully it will help.

 

Do make sure your dining room waiter knows about the allergy and how severe it is. Ask if there are any hidden allergens in any of the foods the allergic person orders (i.e. for ppl with nut allergies, they may be surprised that there are nuts in the brownies).

 

Do make sure the allergic person carries their Epi-Pen or other meds with them at all times on the cruise, including when going into port in case they eat there.

My son is severely allergic to peanuts and we have cruised with him twice now. Both times we sent an email to the cruise line in advance and were asked to meet with the head waiter. We have had no problem. After speaking with my son's allergy specialist we are not even worried about peanut oil. He told us that the oil is rarely used and when it is it is not cold extractred and contains no peanut allergen. That is true for north america but perhaps not in the middle east or Asia.

So we now go to restaurants where they cook fries in peanut oil and we have had no reaction even though my son's allergy tests are still very positive (both skin and blood).
