One day car rental times

If you want to rent a car just for the day (not overnight) and want to pick it up as early as possible and return it as late as possible, what times would you use on your reservations for the following?

Ship arrives 8am and stays overnight (Maui).

Ship arrives 9am and departs 6pm (Hilo)

Ship arrives 7am and departs 6pm (Kona)

It seems to take about an hour for the ship to clear each port. I'd ask for a reservation an hour later and plan to return it an hour before the ship sails. Caveat - in Kona you want to rent from Thrifty or Dollar at the King Kam Hotel - just steps from the tender pier. Nancy

That's good to know about how long it takes at the port. I just checked Enterprise on line and the earliest that they rent is from 8AM - 6PM on Honolulu. Not very late considering that we have until 11 PM that we can spend there but I guess we can just go back to the ship and play in the Casino, ;)

Or take TheBus down to Waikiki.

Not while your ship is berthed in Honolulu, as local (Hawaiian) law prohibits it. I'd plan an evening excursion, or find a rental car company with later hours or after hours drop off, if you want to maximize your use of time that day. Your ship may very well have those port hours to permit passengers to attend the Polynesian Cultural Center luau that evening, so you might want to look into that option among your ship's shore excursions.

At $24 a day for the car rental, I think that would be the easiest way to go then waiting on The Bus, especially since we haven't decided on what we want to see first. We left this Island open for excursions since we have been here before and saw most of the things we wanted to see. I don't know, we are so undecided at his point!

I forgot all about the no gambling while in port. When we were there before, the Polynesian Cultrual Center was picketing and they didn't recommend that we go there, so this could be a good idea, thank you for suggesting it! :)

No problem, and I hope you have a marvelous cruise, no matter what you decide on for Oahu. :)

Its been a few years, so I may be out of date. However, on Kauai, Kona and Maui, the issue was not so much how late you can turn in the car, but, when they offered the last shuttle to the pier

Last time we cruised Hawaii, the last shuttle to the ship left at 4pm, which is about the latest you want to be back at the ship anyhow.

Planning your travels is very important. You don't want to miss something because you spent the first hour trying to figure out where you want to go

I would set pickup time as the time the ship arrives and then set drop off to keep it for 24 hours (you can always turn one in early) or set drop off for the time the ship leaves, either way it should not make a difference in price. Thrifty told us they will always hold a car for 2 hours after the reservation time and if you call will hold it longer.
