eileen11 Posted June 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2004 Spleen, I just found out that Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesdays. Of course, Tuesday is the only full day I'll be in Oahu. Can you recommend anything like Hanauma Bay that isn't too far from the pier? Thank you! spleen93 Posted June 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2004 Hanauma Bay isn't all that close to the pier either. It's about a 30-45 minute drive from the pier. So the next question is, what are your priorities? Do you want to snorkel? Lie on a beautiful beach? Oahu's got a variety of nice beaches but some are better than others for different things. eileen11 Posted June 22, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted June 22, 2004 We love to snorkel and were really looking forward to Hanauma Bay. Now we're looking for something similar...Are there any other beaches that are known/good for snorkeling that are around the same distance from the pier as Hanauma Bay? If not, then what beach would you recommend as one of the nicest beaches in the area...within a 45 to 60 minute radius of the pier? Thank you! spleen93 Posted June 22, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2004 Eileen, The 2 best snorkeling locations on Oahu are going to be Hanauma Bay and Shark's Cove. Shark's Cove is located on the North Shore - not a very pretty area to lie on the beach but great snorkeling - October should be early enough that the waves shouldn't be too big on the North Shore (waves are good for surfing but not so good for snorkeling). However, driving distance from the pier will be about 60 minutes or possibly a little more. A beautiful beach to lie on (but doesn't have great snorkeling) would be Lanikai Beach in Kailua. It would be about 30-45 minutes from the pier (take Pali Highway into Kailua town). One of the most beautiful beaches in the state ... and generally not very crowded (much less so than Hanauma ... and probably Shark's Cove as well). eileen11 Posted June 24, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted June 24, 2004 Thank you so much, Speen! I think we'll skip the snorkeling and lie on the beach you recommended. :)
spleen93 Posted June 24, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2004 Just make sure that you get directions on how to get there (guidebook or something). It's not very well labeled on street signs and such. :) Spleen
CINDYSUE Posted June 28, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 28, 2004 Hi Spleen. Thanks For All The Help You Gave Me For Our Trip. It Was The Greatest! Eileen, I Have To Agree With Spleen. Lanakai Was The Most Beautiful Spot I Have Ever Been To. It Is Rather Hard To Find. You Circle A Residential Area And Just Have To Park And Walk Between Houses. Look For Small Signs. We Were Sitting On Beach And A Very Nice Chinese Man Comes Walking Up To Us. He Asked Us Where We Were From. When We Said Dallas, He Had A Brother Living Here. He Told Us We Were Sitting In Front Of Michelle Phiefer's House And Pierce Brosnan's Was Next Door. The Sand Is Undescribable. It Is Like A Golden Powder. Water Was A Beautiful Azure Blue. It Was Heaven. Not Crowded At All. Make Sure You Go!!!!
eileen11 Posted June 29, 2004 Author #8 Share Posted June 29, 2004 Thanks...it sounds perfect! We will definately go there. A 45 minute drive is nothing to us from California! :)
