Med in May...

Recommended Posts

What kind of weather should we expect - Barcelona to Venice... Mid to late May.... Also what are the crowds like this time of year??

It's a beautiful time to go. We've done it twice, both times in mid-late May. The weather will vary from the mid 70's to mid 80's, in Greece it'll be dreadfully humid, but everywhere else just gorgeous. I think it rained 1 full day on our first trip. It was so bad that we skipped Malta and the Captain made it a sea day and substituted Mallorca. No one complained. On the second trip we had one afternoon of rain in Naples. Not a big deal. It's less crowded in May than June or July but there's still a fair amount of people from cruise ships in all the port cities. Hope this helps. You'll love it no matter when you go!

Seems a little late to ask such questions. Go to either Intellicast or Weather underground web site and use historical option. For example, Barcelona last 24 May was 70/55; Marseille 25 May was 76/57; Florence 26 May was 77/55; Rome 27 May was 74/56; Naples 28 May was 75/59; Istanbul 31 May was 75/57; Kusadasi/Ephesus (Irmir closest) was 87/67, Athens 2 June was 76/58; and Venice 4 June was 74/60. For these data points, looks like EKOL Travel's recommendation re shorts was a good one, and long pants/shirts with at least half sleeves will work for ports with churches or mosques.

Another piece of data is available at Cruisecal.com. You can find out what other ships will be in port when you are. For example, I will be on the Emerald Princess (you?). Particularly heavy days appear to be Naples and Athens. For example, on 28 May the Emerald Princess, Voyager of the Seas, and Norwegian Gem will all be in port. What will these 1000s of passengers do on this Wednesday? Should you be first in line to walk through Pompeii or wait until the afternoon? Do you want to do Amalfi coast in an 8-passenger van or a 50-passenger bus? Would this be a good time to go to Capri (unless you have a friend with a private villa)? Same issue for the Acropolis?

If for some very strange possibility these data points are very relevant to you, give me an email. A group of us folks have a few open slots in 4 tours that you may find of interest.

We were in the Med second week of May last year, Athens to Venice. We had warm weather and no rain, with one cloudy half day. However, your perception of temperature depends on what you will be leaving behind at home.

The crowds are much less than you are likely to get in the summer.

Should be a good time to go!
