No smoking in Ventura cabins

Have recieved a letter today regarding Ventura's smoking policy.

Smoking on Balconies and other designated areas only.....but not in cabins.

Hooray!!

Lou

Hooray and it should be banned on balconies as well why should we pay for a balcony only not to be able to sit out because of someone smoking next door. Horrid !!!!!!!!!!! Just been on Azamara journey who have a wonderful no smoking policy it is just allowed in two small areas of the ship one corner of one lounge and one corner outside. The policy was well kept to and no smoking on balconies. Wonderful !!!!!!!!!!

Hi ligortig, i think its going to be very hard to police especially if you are allowed to smoke on your balcony but not in your cabin. I suppose the cabins will be fitted with smoke detectors.

We normally have a bucket class cabin so it will not really effect us, however it will be nice knowing that you are going into a fresh cabin rather than one that has smoked in.

Whatever your views are about smoking on ships, I hope that no one would support P&O's 'sharp practice' of changing the smoking RULES in such a draconian manner half way through the cruising season. I know that they are offering a refund, but what good is that when there are only a couple of months to go before your eagerly anticipated cruise.

HOPEFULLY the imminent new brochures will clearly spell out the smoking restrictions.

Contrary to a common misconception, most smokers are intelligent enough to be able to tell the difference between a balcony and a cabin. If a few can't, I'm afraid that in a long and undistinguished (should than be unextinguished?) smoking career I have never known a smoke alarm to react to cigarette smoke; they prefer burnt toast.

Oh, and a little live and let live may be in order. I don't like smoking in cabins, but to ban us from the occasional indulgence outside is a tad obsessive.

I'll get me coat,

Mary

We got letters in December about the changes to the smoking policy on our April cruise on Oceana, so there may well have been people who were affected. Perhaps P&O don't see this as a major problem

Elaine

Being informed 4 months before your cruise when all of the acceptable alternatives are most likely booked up is, well, 'hobson's choice'

My fear would be that they change the rules again mid season, so the balconies become a no go area. Consequently I will no longer be cruising P&O.

However if I am being honest we had already made that decision before the smoking debacle, as there are far better products on the market than P&O.

Regards

Its about time smoking is banned from the whole ship. I am sure other lines will follow not sure about Costa and all the Italians. It should have been banned years ago.

Last year On the Navigator of the seas someone was allowing their ash to be blown on to the prom deck from a cabin above.

Down with the smokers I say if they are found to be smoking in the cabin send them of at the next port with the naughty sticks!!! And let us younguns take over the pools!!!!! and eat all the food.

People cancelling their cruises on Ventura (& Oceana) because of the revised smoking rules is way over the top.

All Smokers will still be able to smoke in designated areas outdoors, the designated public room (Casino?) and shoreside (where permitted). In addition those with balconies can smoke there too. (Pity the non-smoker down-wind from them).

P&O are reflecting passenger feedback (the majority being ex & non-smokers), safety at sea (the cabin ban) and that ex.UK & Irish subjects/citizens are now accustomed to the shoreside laws that ban smoking from ALL indoor public places.

The simple measure is: the impact of smokers smoke on non-smokers vs the impact of non-smokers on smokers. No contest.

Smoking is not essential to life (in fact it shortens it for smokers and non-smokers alike). It is now easier to give up - the only barrier now being those who won't (no such word as "can't" - why? The millions of ex.smokers testify to that).

I suspect if, after one had made the booking, certain other character flaws were suddenly banned from cabins, it may present a few difficulties to some...

Mary having been a smoker for a good many years myself i can understand

that you take exception to some of the views posted.

Please reread my post as i did not mention or imply that smokers are not intelligent.

As for live and let live, well i'm all for that but it took me quite a while to give up smoking and it was by no means easy but i did it and i'm afraid i dont want to be anywhere near some body elses.

There are designated smoking areas on ships that smokers can use and we non smokers then have a choice if i want to be near it or not but when i book my cabin and there is not a smoking/non smoking booking policy and i through no choice of my own have to breathe in second hand smoke i'm afraid i take exception. So sorry if this offends you but i am estatic that i will now get a fresh cabin.

Here Here

We both used to smoke but gave up about 26years ago when it was made apparent that passive smoking would affect others in particularly our CHILDREN all of whom (now grown up) do not smoke.

Being a reasponsible adult I feel that people smoking where I can beath it in are being UNRESPONSIBLE whether inside or out ie. on the balcony next to me.

I only found this out today in an email from another cruise web site, wonderful news. Does anyone know if the balconies on Ventura have solid sides? We have one booked and I am concerned about the effect of smoke from other balconies.

I agree P & O could designate one side as smoking balcones but not the one I am on

Having worked for many years before my retirement in the Hospitality Industry, I can assure you Mary that Cigarette smoke does affect the smoke alarms, although Cigar smoke is far worse.

However you are correct that burnt toast also sets them off as does steam from the bathroom.

Many a night I have had to stand out in the cold waiting for the Fire Brigade to arrive, having had to evacuate a 194 bedroom 4* hotel due to the Fire Alarms going off, for all of the above reasons.

As for smoking I am a non smoker and I can honestly say that passive smoking has never bothered me.

However in the past year I have had to clear out a Bungalow of a relative who died and was a smoker all her life, the place and everything in it smelt of stale tobacco.

Cruised 16 nights on the Aurora recently and had the stinkiest cabin ever thanks to the previous occupant being a smoker! It was absolutely awful. Our cabin steward even agreed that it was bad and he got some air freshener. It took a week before we stopped saying "poooooooogh wotta stink!" every time we entered our cabin after being outside. Even then the smell wasn't nice. All the soft furnishings absorb the smell and its not as if you can open a window!

The good news for us was that the steward told us that after this cruise there would be no more smoking allowed in the Aurora cabins. Hoorah!!!

Perhaps it would be helpful if you prefaced your remarks with "In my opinion"

Otherwise people may think you extremely arrogant. Whatever ones views on smoking it is not cause to question how people wish to spend their holidays. Such comment could be misconstrued as suggesting a superior attitude.

I, and other peoples opinions posted on this site, on smoking or other subjects, is clearly their opinion, unless otherise qualified eg quoting a source or a.n.other.

If contributors interpret my contributions as arrogant, that is entirely a matter for them.

I interpret all the different shades of opinion of any topics posted on here (or elsewhere) as wise, perceptive, right, foolish, ill-conceived or wrong. However, I generally do not pass an opinion about other peoples opinions except those that I percieve as wise, perceptive or right.
