1cruiselvr Posted September 23, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Okay, so those that have been upgraded (5 Princess cruises completed, and zero upgrades BTW, headed toward #6 in 5 weeks), when did they happen? Days/weeks/months before? Or did you find out at the port? Did you book a specific cabin or a gty? Happy Sailing!
bardgal Posted September 23, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Always get upgraded - usually 90 days pre-cruise. Always booked a cabin number. Have never booked anything less than a balcony since 2001, and usually book at least 6 months in advance (when possible).
HighRoller Posted September 23, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Mine have all happened at different times on each sailing 9 and coutning and always have been upgraded on each sailing so far. I never book a GTY and always an assigned cabin. The upgrades have varied from 3 weeks or less prior to sailing and as recently as you all know 72 days prior to sailing on my Dec 3rd Tahitian cruise. I have always been upgraded from balcony to mini-suite or from a mini-suite to Full Suite. That being said, many of my best upgrades happen within 48 hours prior to sailing if any Full Suite inventory is unsold before they close out the voyage, I ma given further consideration and upgraded further into a Suite from my last cabin assignment. MichTraveler Posted September 23, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 23, 2004 Went to Alaska twice inside guaranteed using TA. No upgrate. Went to W.Carib booked inside guaranteed using Princess directly and got upgraded to obstructed view. Upgrade occurred after we got our luggage tags, about 5-7 days before we left, but we were more than willing to scratch out the room number for the new one. Good luck -- maybe this will be the cruise they move you all the way up!
mii Posted September 23, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 23, 2004 O.K. I am sailing next week on the Sapphire (10/2/04) and have a assigned mini-suite. There are on-line sites that still have 6 suites left and there is a small hope that my DH and I might get one. This will be our 6th princess, bought the cruise 7 months ago, and am a AB. So we shall see. If not I am thoroughly going to enjoy that mini-suite. Marilyn
nancyrg Posted September 24, 2004 #6 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I was so lucky to get 2 great upgrades. First one was last february on the Golden (my 6th Princess cruise) We were upgraded from an assigned mini suite to a penthouse suite. We found out from our TA 1 week prior to sailing. The other upgrade was on the Grand, we were upgraded from a BB balcony to a vista suite. Again, we found out 2 weeks prior to sailing on the cruise personalizer. It is very easy to get spoiled by a suite! My other cruises, we were not upgraded, so we are always sure to book a cabin that we are going to enjoy, because you never know! Rare sunluva7 Posted September 24, 2004 #7 Share Posted September 24, 2004 On our Grand sailing two years ago, we booked a specific balcony cabin, were upgraded to a a bigger balcony (Caribe?), and finally upgraded a third time to a mini-suite. :) It was our 25th anniversary and our first cruise - don't know if that had anything to do with it. Booked 2 cabins - a quad (Caribe balcony) and a double (inside) - on the Caribbean Princess for next summer. Don't expect an upgrade on the quad but interested to see if we get an upgrade on the inside.
Carquay Posted September 24, 2004 #8 Share Posted September 24, 2004 2 weeks - mini to full suite. And I don't care what you people say, but i am convinced that TA's can and do play a role in who receives an upgrade. I also suspect that, like Vegas, you get upgraded to a better room if you habitually drop a lot in the casino. carquay
Marmarjudy Posted September 24, 2004 #9 Share Posted September 24, 2004 Three Princess cruises, so far (4th one booked) first one two years ago. Every time booked a specific AD mini and marked it no upgrade because we had either E728 or E729 on a Grand class ship. Never booked more than 4 months out. Used small local travel agent/sister, no great deal. 1st cruise: sailed in assigned cabin 2nd cruise: upgraded to Vista Suite, 4 days before sailing 3rd cruise: upgraded to Premium Suite, maybe a week before sailing 4th cruise: keeping our fingers crossed (8 weeks to go) I'll keep you posted Judy
chunbon Posted September 24, 2004 #10 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I think your TA can add whether the reservation is upgradable or not at the time when they book your arrangement. Cause when I booked the Grand, my TA told me he specifically put it down that the reservation is ok to be upgraded. I am still waiting to see it we will get any though. Toto2Kansas Posted September 24, 2004 #11 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I spoke with my travel agent about this just the other night. YES, your TA can let them know you are available for an upgrade or that you do not want one. Only thing they can't do is things like tell Princess you will accept an upgrade BUT only to a full suite, which I read here quite often. That one is a total myth. Either upgrade or no upgrade is the only thing the TA can do. We were upgraded only once on Princess and that was our very first sailing, outside to a suite, with them many years ago. We always book at least a mini suite and we love the Sun Class ships so that may play a big part in it, there aren't many cabins higher on the Sun Class Ships. KaC-Cruiser Posted September 24, 2004 #12 Share Posted September 24, 2004 We've been upgraded a day after the original booking from a outside balcony to the next category up (with a larger balcony) and also twice upgraded on the date of final payment from an inside to an outside cabin .... twice we had specific cabin numbers, once was a specific category guarantee. We tend to book very far in advance, so I'm not sure if that helps at all.....
melissa_bel Posted September 24, 2004 #13 Share Posted September 24, 2004 Sailed twice and we've been upgraded twice. We found out the good news when we got our tickets. We had sort of an upgrade when we booked. The price we wanted was a category K (inside all the way down on Plaza deck) and got a category I (still an inside, but on Aloha deck) because we were previous passengers (hmmm...). I'm just hoping for a miracle to come.
Crowsie Posted September 24, 2004 #14 Share Posted September 24, 2004 Have been upgraded 3 out of 4 times from balconies to either mini or full suites. We always book a specific cabin. Upgrades have happened anywhere from a couple of months from sailing right up until day before. Only time we weren't upgraded was in China, where the ship was totally sold out. Not looking good for the upcoming Mexico or Asia cruises as both of them are very sold out, too. Sure am glad we booked a mini for Asia as that cruise is 19 days long and we really are looking forward to the extra space. That's not to say that I've quit checking the personalizer twice a day in hopes that the fairy has visited :D
Druke I Posted September 24, 2004 #15 Share Posted September 24, 2004 Way back in Mar 92, was upgraded on Royal Princess at embarkation. At least two other times, upgraded about 6 weeks out, before issuance of tickets. Have turned down upgrades several times, as we considered the new location less desireable than the original. We normally book specific category, and occasionally a specific cabin.
chasingships Posted September 25, 2004 #16 Share Posted September 25, 2004 We have booked the Grand out of Galveston. When I booked the cruise initially they emailed me the confo number for my reservation that afternoon it came back with room # and the couple that is going with said TBA. I called to see if they had been assigned a room #. We booked a triple guaranteed balcony and did not recieve an upgrade, however, the couple we are going with that I booked at the same time received an upgrade to the Caribe deck. Bummer soooo I called the TA and asked why we did not get the same upgrade. They said it was easier to place the double occupance than the triple. They place the triples in the cabins first and the doubles get the others. Don't know if this is correct or not this is what she told me. I did get the TA to check and see of there was a cabin avaliable on the Caribe deck she came back and said there was for and total additional cost of 80.00 so we took it of course. Hope this helps good luck.:D

Kaktus Posted September 25, 2004 #18 Share Posted September 25, 2004 We booked 7 inside cabins on the Diamond and 6 were upgraded to oceanview three days before departure.
MNYTRPS2GO2 Posted September 25, 2004 #19 Share Posted September 25, 2004 We have booked 3 Princess cruises with 2 upgrades. The upgrades were within the same category AE and AD to AA. The third cruise I upgraded myself for $20pp to the Caribe deck BB. For the AE mini we had selected a cabin on the Coral but were switched within a few days of our onboard booking. As it turned out I had to cancel that cruise less than 24 hours prior to departure. When I called to cancel I asked if our traveling companions could be upgraded to that cabin and I was told Princess does not do that. It would have been a nice surprise for them.
