michka Posted September 23, 2004 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2004 For Canadian travellers: Do most travellers booking directly through the cruise line book in Canadian dollar or US dollar? If you book in US dollars and the Canadian dollar gains or drops significantly, does the cruise line adjust the price? And do they mark up a few points on the exchange to add a bit of profit?
CaptData Posted September 24, 2004 #2 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I booked my Hawaiian cruise through the internet with an American co. They just chargered my CC for the down payment so it depends what the dollar is in Oct next year for final payment. If it improves I can jump on it and pay some more down. Speechless Posted September 24, 2004 #3 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I don't think they will adjust it after payment. You simply get the exchange rate for the day that your deposit is charged, then the exchange rate for the day the final payment is made. Not sure if they bump up the exchange rate but I think it's usually correct to a 10th of a percent.
nosnobunny Posted September 24, 2004 #4 Share Posted September 24, 2004 I do what CatData does. Make my deposit in US $ on my Cdn credit card. Then I watch the exchange rates. If the Cdn $ gains, I have the option of paying the balance in full. Beth
Zeno Posted September 24, 2004 #5 Share Posted September 24, 2004 For our latest cruise (this Dec) we paid in U.S. $ after I calculated we would save over $110 Canadian. The cruise supplier was using a conversion rate of 1.4 for calculating their Canadian rates. Considering that the current conversion rate is less than 1.3 this made paying in C$ significantly more expensive. Also we have a U.S. $ bank account - so it was easy just to take money out of that.
